Elon Musk's Creator Monetization Program Struggles to Drive X Premium Adoption
X, formerly Twitter, recently introduced a creator monetization program aimed at compensating content creators for their contributions. This initiative has yielded varying financial outcomes for different tiers of creators. However, the program's impact on X Premium subscriptions, a subscription-based service offered by the platform, has been less significant than expected.
Monetization Results for Different Creators
X's new creator monetization program has proven lucrative for some of Musk's preferred creators, resulting in earnings of tens of thousands of dollars. Even smaller content creators have managed to earn income, albeit in the hundreds of dollars range.

Moderate Effect on X Premium Subscriptions
Despite the promising monetization efforts, X Premium subscriptions have not experienced a substantial surge in numbers. Third-party researcher Travis Brown, who has been closely tracking X Premium subscriptions since its launch, reveals that only 94,000 net users subscribed between July 1 and August 10. Over the past six weeks, the platform has observed an average of 16,000 net new subscribers per week, a modest increase compared to the typical gains of 7,000 to 15,000 new subscribers.
Comparison with Other Initiatives
The impact of monetization on X Premium subscriptions pales in comparison to other initiatives led by Musk. For instance, in the week preceding the deadline to conclude Twitter's previous verification program, a total of 53,682 new Twitter Blue subscriptions were secured. This number rose by another 53,400 subscribers when the deadline was extended. Despite the large number of legacy verified users, these figures were deemed insufficient.
Current and Expected X Premium Subscription Numbers
As of January 2023, the count of X Premium subscribers stands at 827,615. Brown predicts that this number is unlikely to exceed 950,000. Interestingly, Musk has claimed that the X platform boasts more than 540 million monthly users. This implies that only a small fraction of the user base is opting for the premium subscription.
Factors Affecting X Premium Subscriptions
X Premium offers several perks, including a verification badge, longer tweets, and tweet editing capabilities. However, the motivations behind user subscriptions remain unclear.
To be eligible for monetization, users must possess at least 500 followers and have garnered a minimum of 5 million post impressions within the last three months. While the latter requirement was recently eased, its impact on subscription numbers is uncertain.
Limitations in Monetization Eligibility
A notable concern is that over 37% of X Premium subscribers (307,891 users) have follower counts below 500, rendering them ineligible for monetization. Moreover, many may not fulfill the 5 million impression threshold. Furthermore, monetization exclusively considers views from fellow X Premium subscribers, resulting in less than one million subscribers who can contribute to the monetization ecosystem.
Implications for Revenue and Content Reach
These constraints in monetization eligibility could potentially undermine the overall revenue potential of X Premium subscriptions. Additionally, the exclusivity of views from other X Premium subscribers might curtail the reach and engagement opportunities for content creators on the platform. This dual challenge poses questions about the sustainability and growth of X Premium subscriptions in the long term.
