French President Emmanuel Macron Proposes Nationwide Ban on Social Media for Children Under the Age of 15

French President Emmanuel Macron has suggested a nationwide prohibition on social media for children under 15. He stated that if the European Union does not act on this issue, France might implement the policy independently within months. This announcement follows a tragic incident at a middle school in Nogent, eastern France.

A 14-year-old student fatally stabbed a 31-year-old school staff member during a routine bag check for weapons. A police officer was also injured while trying to detain the attacker, who allegedly used the same knife in both assaults. The incident has intensified discussions about youth violence and its potential links to social media.

Frace to Consider Nationwide Social Media Ban for Children Under 15

Macron's Call for Action

"We must ban social media for those under 15 I'm giving us a few months to get the European mobilisation going. Otherwise we'll start doing it in France. We can't wait," Macron said in an interview with the TV channel France 2. He emphasised that unsupervised access to digital platforms is contributing to a culture of youth violence.

Macron's remarks come amid growing concerns globally about social media's impact on children and teenagers. Although French investigators have not confirmed whether online content influenced the stabbing, Macron and other officials have pointed to social platforms as contributing factors in rising youth aggression.

Global Concerns Over Social Media

Following his interview, Macron also took to the social media platform X (formerly Twitter), urging tech companies to step up. "Platforms have the ability to verify age. Do it," he posted, echoing calls from child safety experts who argue that age-gating measures are both possible and necessary.

If France enacts this ban, it would not be the first country with such regulations. Last year, Australia introduced a ban for users under 16 after intense national debate. The government plans to use age-verification technology to enforce this restriction and test more options soon.

Australia's Approach

The Australian ban applies to platforms like Snapchat, TikTok, Facebook, Instagram, and X but exempts gaming and messaging apps since they require account creation for access. The country enforced the ban for at least 12 months with fines up to A$50 million (around $32.5 million) for non-compliant tech companies.

The Australian Prime Minister stressed strong legislation is needed to protect young people from social media "harms." "We want our kids to have a childhood and parents to know we have their backs," he told reporters (via BBC). This highlights global efforts towards safeguarding children online.

As nations grapple with social media's influence on youth behaviour, Macron's proposal reflects broader concerns about digital safety for children. Whether through EU collaboration or independent action, France aims to address these challenges promptly.
