Gmail And Google Docs Users Receiving Invites To Test Bard: Compose Emails, Letters, Using Generative AI

|

Before OpenAI announced ChatGPT-4, Google unveiled a host of AI tools for Gmail, Google Workspace, and cloud software last week. These tools are now being gradually offered to some Gmail and Google Docs users.

Microsoft-funded OpenAI may have been the first to offer a powerful conversational Generative AI to the world. However, Google is trying to seed its Bard platform directly into its bouquet of products and services.

Google Offers Bard In Gmail And Docs Via "Trusted Test Program"

Google is now seeding Bard into the Google Workspace platform which comprises Gmail, Docs, and all the office productivity and collaboration services from the company.

The Trusted Test Program currently includes consumer, enterprise, and education users (over 18) in the United States for now, but should expand to other regions in the near future. Google has invited a "small group" to join by signing up and opting in. Users will have the ability to leave the program at any time.

Microsoft had previously said it would release a similar tool for Microsoft Word. However, the company has launched a new Microsoft Bing Search that's powered by ChatGPT. Microsoft is yet to offer productivity and collaboration tools powered by the Generative AI platform.

How To Use Google Bard Help In Gmail And Docs?

Google assures Bard will be able to summarize mail threads in Gmail, build presentation slides, and take meeting notes as part of its Google Workspace upgrades. The Generative AI can be requested to draft several types of emails such as a birthday invitation or a job cover letter.

Users can also ask Bard to take what the platform has generated and make it more elaborate or shorten it. The platform can even summarize the content using bullet points.

Users can also "Formalize" a message. However, Google chose to demonstrate a whimsical "I'm feeling lucky" option that adds levity and makes other whimsical stylistic choices. Simply put, Bard can make the email or content appear to be formal, informal, or casual, and even insert emojis.

There's a Floating Action Button (FAB) that will appear in the bottom-right corner of the Compose screen in Gmail. It reveals the options for composing the email, which currently include Formalize, Elaborate, Shorten, Bulletize, "I'm Feeling Lucky", and Write a draft.

The Bard AI in Google Docs can expand the content to make the text more elaborate or rewrite it to be concise. Users can draft blog posts or even write song lyrics using the platform.

Google will soon introduce a "Help me write" button on the web that expands when clicked to reveal a prompt input. Upon tapping the option, Google's Bard will generate content based on the request, with users able to thumbs up/down, generate/"View another," and "Refine." Users can then "Insert" it into their current document and make further edits if required and finetune the content.

Participants can submit feedback that Google may use to refine and iterate on the generative AI functionality. Google has deployed a dedicated landing page offering an opportunity to participate in the program.
