Google Search Gets Smarter with New AI Mode and Gemini 2.0 Integration

Google is making significant changes to its search experience, doubling down on AI-powered results with two major updates. First, the company has upgraded AI Overviews with Gemini 2.0 in the U.S., promising faster and more accurate responses, particularly for complex queries involving coding, advanced math, and multimodal searches.

Second, Google is introducing AI Mode, a more interactive, opt-in search experience designed to provide deeper insights and reasoning-based responses.

AI Overviews Expand to More Users

Google claims that over a billion people are now using AI Overviews, though it’s worth noting that this feature appears automatically in searches rather than being a user-driven choice. Now, Google is expanding AI Overviews to teen users and people who are not signed into Google accounts, further integrating AI into everyday search experiences.

AI Mode: A New Way to Search

In addition to AI Overviews, Google is launching AI Mode, an experimental feature available through Search Labs. Unlike AI Overviews, AI Mode requires users to opt-in, allowing those who want a more AI-driven search experience to access deeper reasoning, comparisons, and follow-up queries.

AI Mode introduces a dedicated tab in Search, appearing even before the traditional “All” tab. It uses a custom version of Gemini 2.0 to break down nuanced, multi-part questions that previously required multiple searches. For example, users can ask, “What’s the difference between a smart ring, smartwatch, and tracking mat for sleep tracking?” and receive a structured, AI-generated response with links to additional resources.

How Google Plans to Improve AI Search

Google says AI Mode integrates real-time information sources like the Knowledge Graph and shopping databases, helping users explore topics across multiple formats. However, the company acknowledges that AI-generated results may occasionally reflect biases or take on a persona, promising to refine the system over time.

Future updates to AI Mode will include more visual responses, better formatting, and improved ways to access web content. Google will first invite Google One AI Premium subscribers to test the feature before expanding access more widely.
