Google Authenticator Adds Google Account Sync Feature for Seamless Two-Factor Authentication
Google Authenticator is a mobile app that adds an extra layer of security to online accounts through two-factor authentication. It generates unique codes that are required along with a password to access an account, making it harder for hackers to gain unauthorized access. Google has now announced in its blog post that the app will now support backups and syncing of one-time codes across devices logged into the same Google account. The tech giant also confirmed that it has rolled out the update for both Android and iOS.
Google Authenticator Adds Account Sync Feature for One-Time Codes
Google, in its blog post, explained that they've gotten feedback from users regarding the complexity that arises in case of lost or stolen devices that had the Google Authenticator app installed. Because one-time codes in Authenticator were only stored on a single device, users lost their ability to sign in to any service where they'd set up 2FA using Authenticator if that device was lost or stolen.

To make things easier and hassle-free for users, Google has introduced an account sync feature that stores one-time codes securely in their Google account. This helps prevent service lockouts and ensures that users always have access to their accounts. With this feature, services can rely on users to maintain access and keep their accounts secure.
Google Lists Other Authentication Options
Google noted various options for secure authentication on the web in its post. Along with one-time codes from Google Authenticator, users can also use Google Password Manager to save and quickly sign in to their accounts on Android and Chrome. Another option is "Sign in with Google," which enables users to sign in to websites and apps using their Google Account.
Google also stated that it's collaborating with industry partners and the FIDO Alliance to develop passkey-based authentication methods that offer users even more secure and convenient login options.
How to Use This Feature?
As stated earlier, Google has rolled out an update to its Authenticator app for Android and iOS that adds the ability to safely back up your one-time codes (also known as one-time passwords or OTPs) to your Google Account. To try the new Authenticator with Google Account synchronization, you would need to update the app and follow the instructions.
