Google for India 2023: Enhanced AI-Powered Search and More for Indian Users
Google recently made waves at its 2023 'Google for India' event by unveiling a slew of enhancements designed to offer Indian users a more enriching and localized experience. The tech giant is strengthening its commitment to make AI-powered search more visual, user-friendly, and relevant to local audiences.
A More Visual Search Experience
During the event, Google introduced significant updates to the Search Generative Experience (SGE), an AI-powered search tool that aims to provide more effective and engaging results. Google aims to create a richer search experience by incorporating images and videos into search results. This means that users searching for topics such as "how to drape a saree" will have access to visual guides with images and videos showcasing various saree draping styles, making the information more accessible and easier to follow.

These visual enhancements not only cater to fashion queries but are set to enrich the overall search experience, making it more engaging and informative.
Local Relevance Through User Reviews
Google is making the SGE more relevant to Indian users by introducing location-specific responses. For example, users exploring a city will be able to access information about local attractions, things to do, and user reviews, providing valuable insights and recommendations. This feature ensures that users can make more informed decisions when planning their outings and activities.
Simplified Access to Government Schemes
Many Indians turn to Google Search for information on government schemes related to healthcare, housing, employment, women's welfare, farming, and more. In response, Google is simplifying the search experience by incorporating overviews of more than 100 government schemes in the coming weeks. These schemes span various critical areas and will be accessible in both Hindi and English, streamlining the process of accessing essential information.
Visual Search for Skin Conditions
Google is not only enhancing its search experience but also expanding its capabilities with Google Lens. Users can now use Google Lens to visually search for information on skin conditions. By taking a picture or uploading an image of their skin condition, users can find visual matches and access valuable information about skin issues, contributing to better healthcare awareness.
Empowering Merchants and Consumers
Google Pay, a popular digital payments app, is taking steps to empower both merchants and consumers. It is partnering with ePayLater to provide a credit line for merchants, addressing their working capital needs. Additionally, Google Pay is introducing sachet loans, starting as low as Rs. 15,000, in collaboration with DMI Finance. This feature offers straightforward repayment options, starting at just Rs. 111, making credit more accessible and convenient for small and medium-sized businesses.
For consumers, Google Pay is expanding its personal loan offerings, with Axis Bank now making personal loans available on the platform. More banks are expected to join in the future. Users can also access credit lines from banks via UPI, simplifying the payment process and making formal credit more accessible.
Enhanced Shopping Experience
Google is revamping the shopping experience on its site to make product discovery and shopping more accessible. Users can now search for products with specific filters to quickly find what they are looking for. This visual feed of products and filters aims to simplify the shopping process and enhance the overall experience.
Furthermore, Google is introducing Business Messages in Shopping on Search, enabling users to ask questions and receive quick answers from merchants. This feature will be available to everyone early next year.
For users interested in physically examining products before making a purchase, Google Search will highlight nearby stores that offer the desired product, complete with details on inventory, deals, and shipping timelines.
Additionally, Google is introducing the Google Merchant Center Next, which uses AI to simplify the process of populating online catalogs with information from merchants' websites. This feature offers insights on top-selling products and enhances the planning of product demand.
Immersive News Experience on YouTube
YouTube is rolling out an immersive watch page for news in India, featuring content from credible sources. This feature will be available in 11 Indian languages, starting in Q4 2023. It aims to provide viewers with a comprehensive and deep-dive experience into news topics, recommending content across video on demand, livestreams, podcasts, and Shorts.
AI-Enhanced Security
To combat evolving threats and scams, Google Play Protect, which offers proactive protection against malware and unwanted software, will introduce real-time scanning at the code level in India. This will help detect malicious apps that may attempt to evade detection using techniques such as AI. Google Play Protect will recommend a real-time app scan when installing apps that have not been scanned before, enhancing security and protection.
