Google I/O Connect Bengaluru 2024: Major Focus on AI in India, New Tools and Initiatives Announced
Google recently hosted its India-focused I/O Connect Bengaluru 2024 event. The event showcased new artificial intelligence (AI) models, a benchmarking tool, and various initiatives aimed at the Indian AI community. One of the key announcements was the opening of access to the Gemma 2 AI model for all developers, designed to better adapt to Indian languages.
Google's partnership with the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) Startup Hub aims to bolster India's startup ecosystem. This collaboration is expected to provide significant support to startups focusing on AI technologies. The company also highlighted that over 1.5 million developers globally have utilized Gemini models to create AI-powered tools and applications.

Empowering Developers with Advanced Tools
The Gemini 1.5 Pro model, featuring a two million token context window, is now available to all developers in India. This model was previously accessible only through a waitlist introduced earlier this year. Additionally, the Gemma 2 small language model (SLM) has been released for developers, further enhancing their ability to build sophisticated AI tools.
Google emphasized that India's developer base on Google AI Studio is one of the largest globally. This platform allows developers to create new AI tools using Gemini models. The company also introduced IndicGenBench, a new benchmarking tool tailored for Indian languages, covering 29 regional languages that had not been benchmarked before.
Innovative Frameworks and Tools
The tech giant open-sourced its Composition of Language Models (CALM) framework during the event. This framework enables developers to combine their specialized language models with Gemma, creating more efficient solutions. For instance, a developer building an English coding assistant could offer assistance in Kannada by integrating a Kannada specialist model within CALM.

Gemma's tokeniser was also highlighted as a crucial tool for developing multilingual solutions catering to India's diverse linguistic landscape. By breaking down text into smaller units for AI processing, it facilitates the creation of more versatile and inclusive AI applications.
Supporting Startups with Resources
To further support AI startups in India, Google will offer up to $350,000 (approximately Rs. 2.9 crore) in Google Cloud credits. These credits will help startups with the necessary infrastructure and computational power required for building and deploying AI technologies. Additionally, Google will provide skills development, knowledge sharing, and mentorship through programs like Startup School and Appscale Academy.
A nationwide Gen AI Hackathon will be hosted by Google as part of its efforts to support early-stage startups. This three-month experience aims to foster innovation and growth within the Indian startup ecosystem by providing hands-on opportunities for budding entrepreneurs.
The event underscored Google's commitment to empowering India's developer community by providing access to advanced AI models and resources. By fostering partnerships and introducing innovative tools like IndicGenBench and CALM, Google aims to drive significant advancements in India's AI landscape.
