Google to Delete Millions of Gmail Accounts Next Month

In a recent announcement, Google has revealed an upcoming purge of dormant Gmail accounts, slated for December 2023. This move is part of the company's broader initiative to enhance security by deactivating accounts that have been inactive for a minimum of two years. While the measure aims to bolster cybersecurity, it raises concerns for users who infrequently access their Gmail accounts.

The Inactivity Policy Explained

Google Vice President of Product Management, Ruth Kricheli, outlined the changes in a May blog post, emphasizing the need to mitigate potential risks associated with forgotten or unattended accounts. The new policy mandates the deletion of Google accounts and their contents, including Gmail, Docs, Drive, Meet, Calendar, and Google Photos, if they remain inactive for two years. This, according to Google, helps address security vulnerabilities linked to outdated passwords and the absence of two-factor authentication.

Risk Assessment

The inactivity policy specifically targets personal Google accounts that haven't been accessed for two years. Notably, accounts associated with organizations, schools, or businesses are exempt from this measure. This implies that users with dormant personal accounts are the primary demographic at risk of losing access to their Gmail.

Protecting Your Account

Google's recommendation to keep an account active is simple: sign in at least once every two years. The company emphasizes that various activities count as account engagement, including reading or sending emails, using Google Drive, watching YouTube videos, downloading apps from the Google Play Store, conducting searches, and utilizing Google Sign-in for third-party apps or services.

Subscription Shield

For users with active subscriptions tied to their Google Account, such as Google One, news publications, or apps, there is an additional layer of protection. Ongoing account activity linked to these subscriptions will be considered, ensuring that accounts remain unaffected by the inactivity policy. Importantly, Google has clarified that accounts associated with YouTube videos will not be deleted at this time.
