Google's Med-PaLM 2: Advancing AI in Healthcare
Google's commitment to leveraging artificial intelligence (AI) in healthcare has reached a new milestone with the development of Med-PaLM 2. This AI tool, currently undergoing testing at the Mayo Clinic research hospital, aims to revolutionize medical queries and enhance access to healthcare information.
The Evolution of Med-PaLM 2
Med-PaLM 2 is an upgraded version of PaLM 2, which was introduced at Google I/O in May of this year. PaLM 2 serves as the language model behind Google's virtual assistant, Bard.

Building upon the foundations of its predecessor, Med-PaLM 2 has been designed specifically for medical conversations and holds tremendous potential to address healthcare challenges in countries with limited access to healthcare professionals.
Enhanced Training and Specialized Capabilities
Google has taken a meticulous approach in training Med-PaLM 2 by curating a comprehensive collection of demonstrations conducted by medical experts. This targeted training aims to enhance the tool's effectiveness in healthcare conversations, distinguishing it from more generalized chatbots such as Bard, Bing, and ChatGPT.
Balancing Accuracy and Potential
While Med-PaLM 2 exhibits remarkable capabilities, an internal email revealed that Google acknowledges the accuracy issues commonly observed in large language models.
A research paper published by Google in May shed further light on this aspect. Physicians involved in the study identified certain inaccuracies and irrelevant information in answers provided by Med-PaLM and Med-PaLM 2 when compared to responses from human doctors.
However, it's worth noting that Med-PaLM 2 performed on par with actual doctors in various other aspects, including reasoning abilities, consensus-supported answers, and comprehension. This underscores the potential of AI to augment medical expertise and contribute significantly to healthcare practices.
Early Stages and Ongoing Improvements
Greg Corrado, Google's senior research director, emphasized that Med-PaLM 2 is still in its early stages. While Corrado wouldn't personally rely on it for his family's healthcare, he believes that Med-PaLM 2 can substantially expand the application areas where AI can be beneficial in healthcare.
Privacy Policy Updates
In alignment with its commitment to transparency, Google recently updated its privacy policy. The updated policy explicitly mentions the utilization of publicly available data for training language models (previously referred to as AI models). By incorporating this data, Google aims to enhance the training and performance of its AI models while upholding privacy standards.
