Here’s How The First Man With Elon Musk’s Neuralink Implant Is Using The Tech

Noland Arbaugh, the first individual to receive a Neuralink implant, is utilizing it for both educational and creative endeavors. In a recent update on X, formerly Twitter, Arbaugh shared insights into his journey with the Neuralink. He affectionately named his implant "Eve" and detailed his experiences of seven months post-surgery.

How is Noland Arbaugh Utilizing the Neuralink?

Who is Neuralink's First Human Patient?

Arbaugh was a student and athlete in Texas when an accident in 2016 left him paralyzed from the shoulders down. The incident occurred while he was working as a summer camp counsellor, resulting in a complete loss of sensation below his shoulders. Last year, Neuralink received approval from US authorities to begin testing their brain implants on humans.

The primary device used by Neuralink is called the "Link," which is roughly the size of five stacked coins. This implant is surgically placed inside the brain. Arbaugh spends about four hours daily at Neuralink's facilities, engaging in various tasks using his implant.

Educational and Creative Pursuits

Arbaugh dedicates approximately three hours each day to learning French and Japanese through different resources. He is also revisiting basic math concepts via Peterson Academy to prepare for a potential return to school. Additionally, he reads extensively, exploring works by authors such as Brandon Sanderson, Stieg Larsson, JRR Tolkien, and Victor Hugo.

In his personal time, Arbaugh uses his Neuralink implant for devotionals and Bible studies. He is contemplating returning to school with a possible shift towards neuroscience due to his unique perspective on the field. He also dreams of finding employment, starting a charity, and eventually building a home for his parents.

Technological Advancements

Arbaugh actively contributes to improving the user interface and overall performance of the technology. He constantly pushes himself to achieve new milestones. His activities include training to use different body movements for computer functions like clicking and typing.

He also focuses on handwriting by mentally simulating holding a pencil to produce keystrokes on a screen. Beyond academics and writing, Arbaugh has resumed creative writing with hopes of publishing his work in the future.

Neuralink's Vision

Neuralink aims to enhance human capabilities and assist with neurological conditions such as ALS and Parkinson's disease. Their goal is to create a robust connection between humans and AI, enabling control of devices like phones and computers through thought alone.

"The main device used is called the 'Link,' which is about the size of five coins stacked together," Arbaugh explained in his post. The company envisions boosting human abilities significantly while addressing severe neurological disorders. They strive to integrate advanced technology seamlessly into everyday life.

Arbaugh's journey with Neuralink highlights both the challenges and potential of this pioneering technology. His dedication to learning and creativity showcases the transformative impact that such innovations can have on individuals' lives.
