McAfee Study Reveals Alarming Trends in Online Romance Scams

In its second annual "Modern Love" study, security software provider McAfee exposes concerning statistics regarding the role of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in online dating, with significant implications for the rise in catfishing and romance scams. The study highlights a surge in Indians turning to AI for assistance in the realm of online dating. Despite 60% expressing potential offense at receiving AI-generated Valentine's messages, 56% plan to use AI to write messages for their love interest, citing a confidence boost. Notably, 81% reported increased interest and better responses when using AI-generated content compared to their original messages.

Valentine's Day Scams on the Rise

Since late January, McAfee Labs warned of a surge in Valentine-related scams, including a 25% increase in malware campaigns, a 300% rise in malicious URLs, and a staggering 400% increase in romance-themed spam and email scams, particularly centered around Valentine's shopping and gifts.
