OpenAI Acquires Jony Ive's AI Startup to Develop AI Hardware in 2027
OpenAI, led by Sam Altman, has acquired Jony Ive's AI hardware startup io. This acquisition has sparked interest in a potential AI device being developed by the two companies. According to an industry analyst, the device is currently in its prototype stage. It is slightly larger than Humane's Ai Pin but may retain the elegance of an iPod Shuffle. Mass production is expected to begin in 2027.
The AI device might feature cameras and microphones for environmental awareness. This could be beneficial when worn around the neck, offering contextual information about the surroundings. Although it lacks a display, it will connect to smartphones and PCs to utilise their computational and display capabilities.

AI Device Design and Production Plans
Ming-Chi Kuo, an analyst at TF Securities International, shared insights on X (formerly Twitter) about the prototype's size and design. He mentioned that while it resembles an iPod Shuffle in elegance, its final design could change as development progresses. The device's assembly and shipping are likely to occur outside China due to geopolitical tensions.
Vietnam is considered a probable location for assembling this AI device. This decision aims to avoid risks associated with geopolitical challenges and tariff disputes between China and the US. The strategic move ensures smoother production and distribution processes.
Insights from OpenAI's CEO
Sam Altman has reportedly hinted at this 'secret' AI device during internal discussions at OpenAI. He clarified that it is not designed as a pair of glasses, aligning with Jony Ive's scepticism about wearable AI products. Instead, it is envisioned as a third core device alongside a MacBook Pro and an iPhone.
The AI device can be placed on a desk or carried in a pocket, offering versatility in usage. Its design caters to users seeking seamless integration with existing tech ecosystems without adding bulk or complexity.
This collaboration between OpenAI and Jony Ive marks a significant step in AI hardware innovation. As they work towards refining the prototype, anticipation builds around its potential impact on personal technology use.
