Meta’s Big Move: Political Content Takes a Backseat on Instagram and Threads
In a significant shift from its previous stance, Meta has announced that it will no longer push political content on its users across Instagram and its new app, Threads. This move mirrors Meta's efforts on Facebook to reduce the visibility of political content. The announcement, made on Friday, outlines the company's plan to avoid making Threads another platform like Twitter (now X), known for its heated political debates and toxicity. Instead, Meta aims to create a more neutral environment by not recommending political posts by default.
Reducing Political Content in the Lead-Up to U.S. 2024 Elections
As the U.S. 2024 elections approach, Meta is taking steps to ensure its platforms, including Instagram and Threads, limit the spread of political content. This decision extends to various sections of the apps, such as Instagram Reels, Instagram Explore, and In-Feed Recommendations. The company's objective is to differentiate Threads from Twitter's approach to news and political content, aiming for a platform that doesn't "amplify news," as stated by Instagram head Adam Mosseri.

What Changes for Instagram Users
While the new changes will affect how Instagram and Threads recommend content, they won't impact the visibility of content from accounts users already follow. Political content, such as news about elections or laws, will still be accessible to followers through the Feed and Stories but won't be recommended to others. Meta also introduced an Account Status feature for professional accounts to check their eligibility for recommendations and provided options for appealing decisions or removing posts to regain eligibility.
Options for Users Who Want Political Content
Recognizing that some users still wish to receive political content, Meta has provided an option to enable political recommendations in the settings of both Instagram and Threads. A similar feature will be implemented on Facebook in the future. This move is part of Meta's broader strategy to navigate the complex landscape of social media's role in political unrest and misinformation. By allowing users to opt-in for political content, Meta aims to strike a balance between user choice and a responsibility to minimize harm.
Meta's decision to remove politics from its recommendation algorithms on Instagram and Threads represents a significant shift in how the company manages content on its platforms. It's a response to widespread criticism over the role of social media in political unrest and misinformation.
