Microsoft Fires Employee Who Called AI Chief a 'War Profiteer' During Protest at 50th Anniversary
Microsoft has dismissed an employee following disruptions at its 50th-anniversary event. According to an email obtained by The Verge, Ibtihal Aboussad's employment was terminated due to "acts of misconduct." Aboussad, along with another protester, interrupted the event by accusing Microsoft's AI CEO, Mustafa Suleyman, of being a "war profiteer" and urging Microsoft to cease using AI for genocide in their region.
During the event, Vaniya Agrawal also protested by interrupting speeches from Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates, former CEO Steve Ballmer, and current CEO Satya Nadella. Both employees had sent emails to thousands of colleagues urging Microsoft to end its contracts with the Israeli government. These actions were part of a broader protest associated with No Azure for Apartheid, a group opposing Microsoft's dealings with Israel.
Protest Details and Consequences
The email addressed to Aboussad detailed the incident where they disrupted Mustafa Suleyman's speech in Redmond, Seattle. The email stated that Aboussad yelled and pointed fingers at Suleyman before a large audience. Despite Suleyman's attempts to calm the situation, security had to escort Aboussad out due to their aggressive behaviour.
Microsoft Canada officially terminated Aboussad's employment on the same day. Meanwhile, Agrawal resigned as part of her protest but was immediately dismissed after submitting her two weeks' notice. The company viewed these actions as attempts to gain notoriety and cause significant disruption during the event.
Company's Response and Lack of Apology
The email further expressed concern over Aboussad's lack of apology or remorse for their actions. It highlighted that the misconduct seemed intended to disrupt the highly anticipated event. Despite reaching out for comments on these dismissals, Microsoft did not provide a response before publication.
This incident underscores tensions within Microsoft regarding its contracts with Israel. The protests reflect ongoing debates about ethical considerations in technology partnerships. Such events highlight challenges companies face when balancing business interests with employee activism and ethical concerns.
