OpenAI Is Expanding Its Memory Feature to More ChatGPT Plus Subscribers – Here’s How to Use It
In February, OpenAI unveiled the Memory feature, designed to retain key details and preferences across all user interactions with ChatGPT. Now, this feature is being extended to all paid subscribers of ChatGPT Plus, marking a significant stride towards personalized assistance.
How Memory Works and How to Use It Memory functions by storing user preferences and details, ranging from broad-level preferences to specific personal information. For instance, ChatGPT can now remember preferences like travel interests, formatting choices such as bullet points for summarization, and the preference for concise answers.

Using Memory is simple: when you start a new chat, just tell ChatGPT whatever you want it to remember.
Integration Enabled by default, Memory seamlessly integrates into users' chat experiences. ChatGPT updates its memory automatically during conversations, providing users with a "Memory updated" notification whenever new information is retained. Additionally, users can manually prompt ChatGPT to remember specific details for future interactions.
Use Cases ChatGPT's Memory feature helps users in many ways. People who like organized meeting notes can tell ChatGPT to remember their preference for headlines, bullet points, and summaries. Business owners can inform ChatGPT about their shops to get better social media content ideas. Parents can share their child's interests for personalized suggestions on birthday cards or other events. Teachers can set preferences like lesson length and activities to get customized lesson plans.
User Control and Privacy Recognizing privacy concerns, OpenAI allows users to opt-out of the Memory feature if desired. Users can instruct ChatGPT to "forget" any information it has remembered, or manage their memories directly through the settings menu.
Enhancing Personalization Combining Memory with existing features like Custom Instructions, OpenAI aims to make ChatGPT interactions even more personalized. By understanding user preferences and context, ChatGPT can deliver tailored responses and assistance effectively.
Future Rollouts While the Memory feature is currently available to ChatGPT Plus subscribers outside of Europe and Korea, OpenAI plans to extend its availability to other user segments, including Enterprise and Teams subscribers, as well as custom GPTs on the GPT Store.
