OpenAI Temporarily Halts ChatGPT Plus Subscriptions Due to Capacity Challenges
OpenAI has temporarily halted new user subscriptions for its ChatGPT Plus service. The decision comes in the wake of heightened demand following the company's recent developer conference, where it unveiled several new features for paying subscribers.
OpenAI CEO Sam Altman acknowledged that the surge in usage, notably after the developer conference, has strained the platform's capacity. Altman revealed on X (formerly Twitter) that the overwhelming demand prompted the temporary suspension of ChatGPT Plus sign-ups to ensure an optimal user experience for existing subscribers.

User Surge and Cybersecurity Challenges
During the developer day, Altman disclosed that ChatGPT has reached a milestone of 100 million weekly active users. The platform has witnessed a notable uptick in user sign-ups, with over 92% of Fortune 500 companies now utilizing ChatGPT, marking a rise from 82% in August.
However, along with the surge in demand, ChatGPT has faced increased cyberattacks. Following the developer conference, the platform experienced outages and abnormally high traffic, raising concerns about the chatbot's security.
Enterprise-Level Subscription Waitlists
The surge in demand extends beyond individual users, as enterprises are also facing delays. Companies, such as Irreverent Labs, were reportedly waitlisted for several months for the enterprise-level subscription, ChatGPT Enterprise. This subscription offers enhanced privacy and security features.
ChatGPT Plus Features on Hold
ChatGPT Plus, which costs $20 per month, provides users with access to GPT-4, offering higher accuracy and faster responses compared to its predecessors. The subscription also includes image and voice features. During the temporary pause, the service's features, including the new GPT-4 Turbo and custom GPTs, are on hold.
Future Developments: GPT-5 in the Works
Despite the challenges, OpenAI is pressing forward with advancements. Altman shared plans for the development of GPT-5, revealing that the training process for the new model will require a substantial increase in data volume. OpenAI aims to draw data from both publicly accessible datasets on the internet and exclusive datasets from private companies.
Altman acknowledged the challenge of predicting the exact capabilities and skills of GPT-5. Additionally, OpenAI is exploring increased financial support from its major investor, Microsoft, to realize its vision of Artificial General Intelligence (AGI).
