Reddit Eliminates Option to Opt Out of Ad Personalization
Reddit, one of the internet's most popular social platforms, is undergoing significant changes to its privacy settings and revenue generation strategies. These adjustments come as Reddit seeks to enhance its profitability and secure its financial future.
Ad Personalization and Control
One of the most notable changes in Reddit's privacy policy is the removal of the option to opt out of ad personalization based on a user's Reddit activity. While Reddit assures users that their personal messages remain end-to-end encrypted and private, this change means that ad personalization based on Reddit activity will become the default setting for most users.

Reddit mentions that it will still offer opt-out controls in "select countries," although it doesn't specify which countries are included in this category. The platform explains that advertisers rely on on-platform activity, such as community participation and voting patterns, to tailor ads to users' interests.
Ad Personalization and User Concerns
The decision to limit opt-out options has raised concerns among Reddit users. Some are worried about losing control over their privacy settings, which they've had for a long time. While Reddit emphasizes that users won't see more ads but rather better-targeted ones, the shift aligns with Reddit's broader goal of increasing ad revenue and profitability.
Controversial Changes
In addition to ad personalization updates, Reddit is merging toggles related to ad personalization and information from partners into a single setting, eliminating the ability to separate these two preferences.

Furthermore, Reddit appears to be removing toggles related to post recommendations based on "general location" and activity on partner sites and apps, raising questions about how these parameters will affect post suggestions.

Privacy Controls and Limiting Ad Categories
To address some user concerns, Reddit is introducing controls that allow users to limit specific advertising categories. These categories include alcohol, weight loss, dating, gambling, pregnancy, and parenting. By toggling these settings, users can potentially see fewer ads from these categories. However, Reddit notes that its system, which uses manual tagging and machine learning, may not be 100% accurate initially but should improve over time.
Reddit's Contributor Program
In addition to privacy changes, Reddit is exploring new avenues for monetization. It recently launched the Contributor Program, currently available only in the US. This program allows Reddit users to earn money by receiving "gold" rewards. Users with karma ranging from 100 to 4,999 can earn $0.90 per gold received, while those with over 5,000 karma can receive $1 per gold.
This initiative bears similarities to X's (formerly Twitter) Creator Ads Revenue Sharing program, where premium subscription members can earn a portion of ad revenue generated from their posts. While it offers potential earnings, it also raises concerns about encouraging clickbait and low-quality content.
