Samsung Restricting Use of ChatGPT for its Employees: Report

Samsung employees inadvertently leaked confidential information while using ChatGPT at work, unaware of the fact that data shared with the app is used to train the model. This means that details shared with ChatGPT can even appear in response to other users.

How Samsung Employees Leaked Confidential Data

According to a report by The Economist Korea, there were at least three instances of employees accidentally leaking top-secret company details soon after Samsung permitted engineers to use ChatGPT at work.

The report states that on one occasion, an engineer used ChatGPT to check if the source code had any errors. In the second instance, an employee requested the app to optimize the code.

Another worker is said to have converted a previously recorded meeting into a document file. The employee then uploaded the content to ChatGPT and requested it to prepare the minutes of the meeting.

Samsung Allegedly Cracks Down on ChatGPT Usage

Samsung is reportedly investigating the issue. In the interim, the South Korean firm is said to have limited the length of ChatGPT messages to 1024 characters.

Samsung reportedly states in an internal memo to its employees, "If a similar accident occurs even after emergency information protection measures are taken, access to ChatGPT may be blocked on the company network." (translated from Korean)

The internal memo warns, "As soon as content is entered into ChatGPT, data is transmitted and stored to an external server, making it impossible for the company to retrieve it."

The report suggests that Samsung is planning to develop its own AI (Artificial Intelligence) service to prevent such data leaks. The tool will only be used by Samsung's employees.

Don't Trust ChatGPT to Keep Your Secrets

ChatGPT's data policy states that the data fed into the system is used to train its models, unless a user chooses to opt out. ChatGPT also asks users to refrain from sharing sensitive information in the chat since it is unable to purge specific conversations from the chat history.
