Scroll Less, Sit Less! Why Taking Your Phone to the Toilet Might Not Be Such a Good Idea

Using phones in the bathroom has become a widespread habit, turning brief visits into longer stays on the toilet. Dr. Lai Xue, a colorectal surgeon, warns that this can lead to health problems like hemorrhoids and weakened pelvic muscles. Spending more than five to ten minutes on the toilet can cause blood circulation issues due to gravity's effect, especially when the open seat compresses the buttocks.

To mitigate these health risks, experts recommend leaving phones, magazines, and books outside the bathroom. This makes the environment less engaging and reduces the temptation to linger. If bowel movements are difficult, walking around may help stimulate gut muscles. Consuming high-fibre foods and staying hydrated can also ease the process.

Health Risks Of Using Phones In The Toilet

Health Risks of Prolonged Toilet Sitting

Prolonged sitting on the toilet can lead to forced straining and weakening of anal and pelvic floor muscles. This increases the risk of rectal prolapse. The National Academy of Medicine advises drinking 2.7 to 3.7 litres of water daily. Additionally, the US Department of Agriculture recommends consuming 14 grams of fibre for every 1,000 calories.

If difficulty or discomfort during bowel movements persists for over three weeks, it could indicate serious conditions like irritable bowel syndrome or Crohn's disease. Persistent constipation or prolonged toilet sitting might also signal colorectal cancer. Consulting a doctor is crucial if these symptoms occur.

Importance of Medical Consultation

Colorectal cancer rates have been rising among individuals under age 55 since the mid-1990s. If symptoms persist, seeking medical advice is essential. Depending on severity, a referral to a gastroenterologist or colorectal surgeon may be necessary for further examination.

Incorporating these practices into daily routines can help prevent potential health issues associated with extended toilet sitting. By making simple changes like avoiding distractions in the bathroom and maintaining a healthy diet and hydration level, individuals can significantly reduce their risk of developing related complications.
