Sunita Williams and Butch Wilmore Safely Return to Earth; Here're How Musk and White House Reacted!

Sunita Williams has safely returned to Earth after spending 286 days on the International Space Station. She landed near Florida's coast at around 3:30 AM IST in a Dragon spacecraft. Butch Wilmore accompanied her on this journey. The world eagerly awaited their return, marking the end of a significant mission.

Earlier, on March 18th, Crew 9 departed from the International Space Station at 10:35 AM IST. The Dragon spacecraft, operated by SpaceX, carried Sunita Williams and Butch Wilmore back to Earth. American astronaut Nick Hague and Russian cosmonaut Alexander Korbenov were also part of this return journey. Their trip lasted 17 hours before they safely landed in the Gulf of Mexico.

Williams and Wilmore Return from Space Mission

Sunita Williams and Butch Wilmore launched from Cape Canaveral, Florida, on June 5th, 2024. They travelled aboard Boeing's Starliner spacecraft on an Atlas V rocket. This mission was initially planned as a 10-day Starliner Crew Flight Test to the International Space Station.

The Starliner spacecraft reached the International Space Station on June 6th. However, five out of its 28 thrusters malfunctioned during docking. Engineers managed to repair these thrusters, allowing the spacecraft to dock successfully. Despite these repairs, thruster issues and a helium leak caused delays in their mission.

NASA announced on June 18th that the crew's return would be postponed from June 26th due to ongoing technical issues. On July 2nd, it was further stated that repairs would take over 45 days, delaying their return even more.

On August 24th, NASA and Boeing revealed plans for Sunita Williams and Butch Wilmore's return via the Starliner spacecraft. The mission was rescheduled for February 2025, requiring them to stay longer in space.

The Starliner spacecraft landed successfully in New Mexico without crew members on September 7th. This test was similar to the plan for returning Sunita Williams and Butch Wilmore to Earth. Consequently, Crew 9 with two seats was launched on September 28th via SpaceX's Crew Dragon spacecraft.

Return Confirmation

On November 12th, it was confirmed that Sunita Williams and Butch Wilmore were in good health. NASA announced that the Crew Dragon spacecraft would return them to Earth by mid-March.

Their return was confirmed on February 11th, 2025. On March 18th, after departing from the International Space Station at 10:35 AM IST, they completed their mission after a total of 286 days in space. The Dragon spacecraft landed safely at approximately 3:30 AM IST on Florida's coast.
