The Drama Continues: Microsoft Hiring Ex-CEO Sam Altman Isn’t a Done Deal Apparently
Earlier today, we reported that Sam Altman, the former CEO of OpenAI, had been hired by Microsoft. However, it appears that this still needs to be done. Recent reports indicate that Altman and co-founder Greg Brockman are considering a return to OpenAI, but only under certain conditions.
Sources close to the matter told The Verge that Altman and Brockman would only consider rejoining the company if the board members responsible for Altman's dismissal stepped down.

Microsoft's Intricate Role and Satya Nadella's Statements
The involvement of Microsoft in this unfolding drama adds another layer of complexity. Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella addressed the issue during recent media appearances on CNBC and Bloomberg TV. While Nadella remained discreet about Altman's potential role at Microsoft and the possible migration of OpenAI's workforce, he emphasized Microsoft's commitment to partnership. Nadella suggested that governance changes within OpenAI might be on the horizon, hinting at the possibility of Microsoft seeking a seat on the board.
"We definitely will want some governance changes. Surprises are bad, and we just want to make sure that things are done in a way that will allow us to continue to partner well," Nadella stated in an interview with Bloomberg.
Altman's Potential Return and Employee Unity
Regarding Altman's return to OpenAI, Nadella stated, "That's for the OpenAI board and management and the employees to choose. [Microsoft] chose to explicitly partner with OpenAI. That depends on the people at OpenAI staying there or coming to Microsoft, so I'm open to both options."
Anticipation of a mass departure of OpenAI employees, including key figures like Ilya Sutskever, has intensified pressure on the board. Altman's call for unity among employees on social media adds to the challenges faced by the remaining board members.
Tensions and Challenges for Incoming CEO Emmett Shear
Tensions within OpenAI persist, with employees expressing dissent and non-cooperation towards the newly appointed CEO. The power struggle continues, with the majority of the workforce advocating for the resignation of the board.
Incoming CEO Emmett Shear, co-founder of Twitch, faces obstacles in obtaining detailed documentation justifying Altman's dismissal. Plans to hire an independent investigator aim to provide clarity on the events leading up to this crucial moment for the company.
Altman, in public statements, emphasized the importance of OpenAI's continuity while hinting at a commitment from Microsoft. However, questions linger regarding the feasibility of ensuring OpenAI's thriving amidst the potential migration of employees to Microsoft.
