WhatsApp Takes a Stand: New Service to Fight Deepfakes Before Lok Sabha Elections
In a crucial step to counter the proliferation of deepfakes and deceptive AI-generated content, the Misinformation Combat Alliance (MCA) and Meta have jointly announced the launch of a dedicated fact-checking helpline on WhatsApp. Set to be accessible to the public from March 2024, this initiative precedes the upcoming Lok Sabha elections scheduled for April-May, providing a timely tool to combat misinformation.
Collaborative Effort
MCA, a cross-industry alliance with 16 members, joins hands with Meta to enhance fact-checking capabilities, focusing on combatting the spread of deepfakes that could mislead people on matters of public importance. Users can report potential deepfakes via a WhatsApp chatbot, supporting multiple languages, including English, Hindi, Tamil, and Telugu.

Deepfake Analysis Unit (DAU)
MCA will establish a central DAU to manage messages received on the WhatsApp helpline. The DAU will collaborate with fact-checking organizations, industry partners, and digital labs to assess, verify, and respond to content. The program is structured around four pillars: detection, prevention, reporting, and driving awareness about the spread of deepfakes, aiming to empower citizens with reliable information to combat misinformation.
Meta's Commitment
Shivnath Thukral, Director of Public Policy India at Meta, emphasized the necessity of concrete industry measures to combat AI-generated misinformation. Meta aligns with the Tech Accord to Combat Deceptive Use of AI in 2024 Elections, introducing common technical standards for AI detection, transparency solutions, and policies.
Government's Stance
Amid concerns, the Indian government urges social media platforms to act decisively against deepfakes, aligning with IT Rules and laws. Non-compliance will face strict legal consequences.
Meta's Fact-Checking Initiatives
Meta's fact-checking program in India involves partnerships with 11 independent organizations, encouraging users to verify information and report suspicious content through dedicated fact-checking organizations.
Government Warning
Concerned about the weaponization of technology, the Indian government stresses the need for social media platforms to align with IT Rules and community guidelines against deepfakes, emphasizing strict legal consequences for non-compliance.
