Will Aadhaar and Netbanking OTPs Face Delays From December? TRAI Clears the Air

The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) has clarified that the introduction of new message traceability regulations will not lead to delays in the delivery of one-time passwords (OTPs) for Aadhaar, net banking, and other essential services.

This statement comes in response to widespread speculation and reports claiming that, starting December 1, 2024, such delays would occur due to TRAI's mandate for telecom operators to trace all messages within the country. These claims were found to be baseless, with TRAI labeling them as "factually incorrect."

Will Aadhaar, Netbanking OTPs Face Delays From December? TRAI Responds

TRAI Addresses Concerns Directly

In reaction to an article by a news organization that suggested upcoming OTP delays as a result of these new regulations, TRAI made it clear that the implementation of message traceability is designed to enhance the security of messaging systems without compromising service speed or reliability.

"This is factually incorrect. TRAI has mandated the Access Providers to ensure message traceability. It will not delay the delivery of any message," TRAI stated, addressing concerns directly and reaffirming its commitment to maintaining efficient services for essential transactions.

Curbing Spam and Enhancing Security

TRAI's efforts to improve cybersecurity and reduce spam include the recently introduced message traceability mandate, which requires telecom providers to trace the origins of bulk messages. This initiative aims to combat spam and fraudulent messaging effectively.

The original compliance deadline of November 1, 2024, was postponed to November 30, 2024, providing telecom operators with additional time to make necessary technical adjustments and ensure a seamless transition. The regulatory body has confirmed that telecom providers have already set up the infrastructure needed to adhere to these guidelines.

By allowing more time for technical preparations and declarations by Principal Entities and Telemarketers, TRAI ensures that these changes will not impact essential services such as OTP-based transactions. The regulator's primary objective with these guidelines is to safeguard messaging without diminishing the speed or dependability of services.

Reducing Complaints and Penalizing Offenders

TRAI has also taken steps to penalize unauthorized promotional calls through disconnection of telecom resources and blacklisting offenders for up to two years. These measures, along with the message traceability guidelines, form part of a broader initiative to enhance cybersecurity and reduce unwanted communication.

The effectiveness of such regulations is evident, as TRAI reported a 20 percent decrease in complaints about spam calls between August and October 2024. To conclude, TRAI has effectively dispelled rumours regarding the delay of OTPs due to its new message traceability mandate.

By ensuring that these measures will not affect the efficiency of critical services, TRAI has reassured the public that essential transactions will remain unaffected. Moreover, these initiatives are part of a comprehensive strategy to enhance cybersecurity and minimize spam, demonstrating TRAI's commitment to protecting consumers while maintaining the reliability of telecom services.
