Will iPhones and MacBooks Get More Expensive in India After Trump’s Tariffs Kick-in Next Month?
The Trump administration has introduced reciprocal tariffs targeting India, potentially increasing the cost of iPhones and other consumer electronics in the country. These tariffs, effective from April 2, are part of a broader strategy to impose duties on imports from nations that levy higher taxes on US products. This move could lead to price hikes for electronics like Apple iPhones and MacBooks.
Impact on Consumer Electronics
During a joint session of the US Congress, President Trump criticised several countries, including India, for imposing "unfair" tariffs. He specifically mentioned India's "higher than 100 per cent" tariffs on US automotive imports. Trump stated, "On April 2, reciprocal tariffs kick in. Whatever they tax us, we will tax them." This policy aims to ensure equal taxation on imports as other countries impose on American goods.

Although electronic goods were not explicitly mentioned in Trump's address, a report by Mint suggests that the new tariffs could affect a wide range of products, including consumer electronics. India has emerged as a crucial manufacturing hub for brands like Apple, which has been ramping up local production of iPhones and other devices over recent years.
Apple's Manufacturing Expansion in India
Since 2017, Apple has been producing iPhones in India but initially limited its manufacturing to base models. Recently, Apple expanded its production range to include more models. With the latest iPhone 16 series, Apple now manufactures the 16 Pro and 16 Pro Max models in India. The company plans to assemble the iPhone 16e exclusively in India for both domestic sales and exports.
However, the new US tariffs might increase tax liabilities on electronic goods imported from India. This could raise costs for companies relying on India's manufacturing ecosystem. Consequently, if substantial taxes are imposed, brands may need to increase prices to maintain profit margins. This would result in higher product prices not only in India but also internationally.
Broader Tariff Context
The announcement of reciprocal tariffs follows another report indicating that Apple faces a new 10 per cent tariff on products imported from China into the US. This would lead to increased prices for iPhones, iPads, and MacBooks within the United States.
Trump's announcement came shortly after new 25 per cent tariffs on Canadian and Mexican imports took effect. Meanwhile, tariffs on Chinese imports were doubled to 20 per cent. These developments highlight ongoing trade tensions and their potential impact on global supply chains and consumer pricing strategies.
