X Introduces Feature Allowing Users to Restrict Replies to Verified Accounts Only
In a recent move by X (formerly Twitter), the platform has introduced a new feature that allows users to restrict replies to their posts solely to verified accounts. While this change aims to empower users and enhance their experience, it has ignited debates about its implications for discourse and misinformation on the platform.
Controlling Replies on X: How It Works

X users can now exercise greater control over who can engage with their posts by limiting replies to verified accounts. This feature is part of the "Who can reply?" setting, giving users the flexibility to decide who can participate in discussions related to their posts.
When composing a tweet, the default setting reads "Everyone can reply." However, users can modify this setting by tapping on it, revealing four options: "Everyone," "Verified Accounts," "Accounts You Follow," and "Only Accounts You Mention." These options provide users with various levels of control over their conversations.
The Pros and Cons of Verified Account Replies
Proponents of this feature argue that it serves as a valuable tool to combat spam bots and maintain the quality of interactions. Elon Musk, owner of X, expressed his belief that limiting replies to verified accounts would help deter spam bots. However, it's essential to note that instances of verified bot accounts on the platform have been reported, challenging this assumption.
One potential downside of this feature is that it could inadvertently facilitate the spread of misinformation. If a user shares an inaccurate post and restricts replies to verified accounts, non-verified users may be unable to provide corrections through replies. While they can still quote the tweet to share accurate information, replies typically garner more attention from users.
Furthermore, critics argue that this feature may contribute to a growing divide between paying and non-paying users. It aligns with X's strategy to incentivize users to subscribe to its Premium subscription, potentially creating disparities in user experiences.
X's Ongoing Evolution
X continues to evolve, with the introduction of features like verified account replies aiming to enhance user control and safety. CEO Linda Yaccarino has hinted at upcoming features, including video calls on the platform, emphasizing the platform's shift towards diverse content formats.
Video calls are expected to enable one-on-one and group video calls within the Direct Messages (DM) section, allowing users to connect more seamlessly with friends and followers. This anticipated feature aligns with X's commitment to expanding its capabilities and offering a multifaceted user experience.
As X navigates these changes, it will be essential to strike a balance between user control, discourse, and the fight against misinformation.
