The breaking news section, which is the latest element of YouTube platform, gives users an access to the most relevant and recent news. It's still unclear if Google is populating the breaking news section algorithmically or posting hand-picked content. It is also not clear if the section will appear at all times or during breaking news cycle.

The section appears similar to recommended channel on the homepage. Mobile app gets news in between suggested videos in a scrollable format.

YouTube is certainly introducing changes to all of its platforms slowly and gradually. It has not been long since video previews debuted on the platform. Google supposedly utilized the algorithm for a similar feature for Google search on app and Chrome for mobile. Although the Google app shows a six-second preview for videos while YouTube goes with three-second preview.

The recent changes have been introduced to make the platform user-friendly and to attract more users. Not too long ago YouTube's usage was made public at VidCon 2017. It was announced that the platform was being browsed by 1.3 billion logged-in users every month along with the fact that logged-in users spent an average of 1-hour daily on YouTube.
