Microsoft Surface Laptop 5 Launched; Check Specifications, Prices, and Other Details

The hardware-focused Surface Event 2022 revealed the latest devices from Microsoft. The Microsoft Surface 9 Pro, Microsoft Surface Laptop 5, and Microsoft Studio 2+ will cater to a wide range of users. These sleek and premium computers from Microsoft run Windows 11 and are available in a wide range of specifications and colors.

Microsoft has refreshed the Surface Laptop series, and as reported earlier, the company has ditched AMD CPUs in favor of Intel processors. This move has allowed Microsoft to offer Thunderbolt 4 support in the sleek laptop. Attempting to explain its design, Pete Kyriacou, vice president of program management at Microsoft said:

"We focused on shipping Intel 12th Gen. We're great partners with AMD, and we continue to work with them on longer-term projects but for Laptop 5 we don't have AMD models."

Microsoft Surface Laptop 5 Specifications And Features

The latest editions of the Microsoft Surface Laptop are overall quite similar to last year's models, with some added features and slightly upgraded hardware. Microsoft will offer the Surface Laptop 5 in two display configurations. The smaller model features 13.5 inches (2256 x 1504) display, and the larger variant has 15 inches (2496 x 1664) display. Microsoft is sticking to Intel's Iris Xe graphics to power these displays. These laptops are slightly heavier than last year's models, which suggests Microsoft may have opted for a sturdier design.

The 13.5-inch variant will be available with either Intel's 12th Gen Core i5-1235U processor or the Core i7-1255U as an optional upgrade. The larger, 15-inch variant of the Surface Laptop 5 is available with a Core i7-1255U CPU option only. Both laptops can be configured with storage options that start with 256GB and go all the way up to 1TB. These laptops accept LPDDR5x RAM sticks and the range starts at 8GB but goes all the way up to 32GB.

Microsoft seems to have understood that its devices need to offer support for work and entertainment. Hence, the laptops feature Dolby Atmos-enabled speakers, 60W charging support, and an HD camera. There's a USB-C with Thunderbolt 4, a single USB-A, and a 3.5mm audio jack to connect peripherals.

Microsoft Surface Laptop 5 Price, Color Options, And Availability

The 15-inch Surface Laptop 5 is available in matte black or platinum Alcantara color options. The smaller 13.5-inch variant, however, has a few more color options, including a newly introduced sage green option. Other colors include platinum with Alcantara, Matte Black, and Sandstone.

The highlight of these laptops is the inclusion of Thunderbolt 4 support. This will not only allow the laptop to host high-speed devices but can also support multiple 4K monitors. This means the laptops can be easily hooked to multiple large displays without compromising image quality. The rest of the hardware, including the chassis, keyboards, trackpad, and other accessories for the Surface Laptop 5 is similar to the Surface Laptop 4 series. Microsoft has offered new accessories for its devices.

Microsoft will start shipping the Surface Laptop 5 models on October 25th in select markets. The base variant of the 13.5-inch variant starts at $999.99 (approx. Rs. 82,200), while the base model of the 15-inch model starts at $1,299.99 (approx. Rs. 1,07,000). The top-end model of the 15-inch variant, which packs Intel Core i7 CPU, 32GB RAM, and 1TB storage, costs $2,399.99 (approx. Rs. 1,90,000). Microsoft hasn't confirmed if the Surface Laptop 5 variants will be available in India.

It is important to note that these laptops don't have any serious upgrades compared to last year's models. In fact, Microsoft is not even offering AMD CPUs. Mobile variants of AMD's processors have been competing well with Intel's offerings. Hence, it would have made sense to offer AMD and Intel variants. Simply put, if you already have a Surface Laptop 4, it might be better to resist the urge to upgrade just yet.
