A Cheaper "Snapdragon X" Chip Could Soon Power Affordable Windows AI Laptops

Qualcomm is gearing up to shake up the budget-friendly Windows laptop market with a new addition to its Snapdragon X lineup. During the company's Investor Day, Qualcomm hinted at a more affordable Snapdragon X chipset targeting laptops priced around $600, a move that could democratize its high-performance processors.

Although the final name of the chipset remains under wraps, industry speculation suggests it will simply be called the Snapdragon X.

Qualcomm Teases New

Expanding the Snapdragon X Ecosystem

The Snapdragon X family currently includes the high-end Snapdragon X Elite with a 12-core CPU and the Snapdragon X Plus, offering configurations with 8 or 10 cores. This new entry-level chipset is expected to feature a 6-core CPU to bring costs down, though Qualcomm has yet to officially confirm specifics.

Affordable, Yet Feature-Packed

One of the standout features of the Snapdragon X series is its Neural Processing Unit (NPU), and Qualcomm has confirmed this critical component will also be present in the entry-level variant. The NPU is a powerhouse for AI-driven tasks, enabling enhanced performance and energy efficiency. Importantly, it allows budget laptops with this new chip to support Copilot+, Qualcomm's AI-enabled PC experience that offers smart assistance and improved productivity features.

This approach sets Qualcomm apart from competitors, who often reserve advanced AI capabilities for their most expensive chipsets. By bringing these features to the sub-$700 range, Qualcomm could create a compelling value proposition that bridges the gap between affordability and functionality.

Trade-Offs for a Lower Price Point

Achieving this affordability may require some trade-offs. While we don't yet have specifics, it's likely the entry-level Snapdragon X will dial back on CPU cores or graphical capabilities. Even so, Qualcomm's decision to retain the NPU means users won't miss out on the battery life and AI-powered enhancements that have become hallmarks of the Snapdragon X family.

This strategic balance could make the new Snapdragon X-powered laptops an ideal choice for students, professionals on a budget, or casual users who prioritize reliability and longevity over raw power.

CES 2025: The Stage for Big News?

Qualcomm hasn't provided a release date, but CES 2025 in January seems like a strong contender for the official debut. The annual event is a global stage for tech innovations, and introducing an affordable Snapdragon X chipset there would generate significant buzz.

If the timeline aligns, we could see the first wave of laptops with this new chip as early as the first half of 2025. These devices could redefine expectations for budget-friendly Windows laptops by combining advanced AI capabilities, extended battery life, and reliable performance-all at an accessible price.
