Bengaluru Airport to Ditch Gadgets-in-Tray System, Paving the Way for Modernized Security Checks

In a move to simplify and speed up security checks, Kempegowda International Airport (KIA) Terminal 2 is introducing new measures. Passengers using T2 won't need to take out their phones and laptops during security checks soon.

What's Changing?

Bengaluru International Airport Limited (BIAL), the airport's operator, is testing a Computer Tomography X-ray (CTX) machine at T2. This trial, starting in a few weeks, makes KIA the first airport in India to try this technology, integrating it with the Automatic Tray Retrieval System (ATRS) and full-body scanners.

Benefits for Travelers

With three full-body scanners in place, the process becomes quicker and more secure. The goal is to let domestic passengers keep their electronic devices in their bags during security checks. This change is expected to be fully operational by December 2023.

Operators using the CTX machine can see bag contents better, reducing re-checks. This means passengers can move through security more quickly, leaving electronic items and liquids in their bags. It also reduces the need for physical pat-downs after the initial metal detector screening.

Improved Security and Hygiene

The CTX machine uses advanced screening and automatic detection, improving security with high-quality 3D images. Also, the new system aims to minimize physical contact points, enhancing hygiene at security checkpoints.

Terminal 2: A Symbol of Excellence

KIA Terminal 2, known as the 'terminal in a garden,' was inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in November 2022. Since the commencement of domestic operations on January 15, 2023, and international flight operations on September 12, Terminal 2 has become synonymous with excellence in air travel.

While Terminal 1 (T1) caters to domestic flights, Terminal 2 exclusively serves international carriers and hosts domestic flights for AirAsia, Air India, Star Air, and Vistara. The first phase of Terminal 2's construction, with an estimated cost of Rs 13,000 crores, covers a built-up area of around 2.5 lakh square meters, with an additional 4.41 lakh square meters planned for the second phase.
