CES 2018: Sony Xperia XA2, Xperia XA2 Ultra and Xperia L2 selfie-centric smartphones launched

Sony is targeting 2018 as a breakthrough year and is looking forward to showcasing further innovations across the entire Xperia portfolio over the coming months.

Sony Mobile has just unveiled Xperia XA2, Xperia XA2 Ultra, and Xperia L2 - the latest additions to its popular super mid-range and entry line, with Sony camera technology, elegant designs, and powerful performance.

"Our super mid-range product strategy started out as an exciting new idea based on bringing bold technologies to this section of the market in the most accessible way possible," said Hideyuki Furumi, EVP, Global Sales & Marketing, at Sony Mobile Communications.

"Xperia XA2 and XA2 Ultra are no different, with leading front camera technology first seen in our flagship XZ line. We're targeting 2018 as a breakthrough year, and look forward to showcasing further innovations across the entire Xperia portfolio over the coming months," he added.

Xperia XA2 and Xperia XA2 Ultra will start shipping from February 2018 whereas Xperia L2 will start from late January 2018. Pricing of the three smartphones is yet to be announced.

In any case, let's look at what these smartphones have to offer.

Sony Xperia XA2

Sony is touting this to be a camera-centric smartphone. As such, Sony Xperia XA2 features a powerful 23MP rear camera packs Sony's large 1/2.3" Exmor RSTM for a mobile image sensor, with ISO 12800 sensitivity for clear low-light photography.

It features 4K movie recording, that will allow users to create with color and clarity - 120fps slow-motion video capture is also included for dramatizing action and movement. There's a 120-degree super wide-angle 8MP camera up front.
The smartphone comes with a 5.2-inch Full HD display and the company has said it is brighter, sharper and more colorful. The display sits within a beautiful borderless design, taking the screen right to the edge and it's built to last with strong and durable Corning Gorilla Glass.

Unlocking is made easy with the one-touch rear fingerprint sensor - integrated into the smooth metallic back panel. Xperia XA2 is composed of anodized aluminum on the sides, with a diamond-cut finish on the top and bottom, accentuating the industrial beauty of metal. It represents an evolution of the recognizable Xperia "loop surface" form, with smooth screen curvature and a symmetrical layout for a sleek look and comfortable feel.

The handset is backed by a high-capacity 3,300 mAh battery and is powered by Qualcomm Snapdragon 630 chipset. The device also comes with Sony's smart charging technologies; Smart Stamina which extends usage during the day, and Battery Care, as well as Qnovo Adaptive Charging that ensures that the battery stays healthy over time. Quick charging is also supported to give users hours of power with just minutes of charging (requires Quick Charger UCH12W).

Other specs include 3GB RAM and either 32 or 64GB of internal storage which will be expandable up to 256 GB via micro SD card. The smartphone runs on Android Oreo 8.0. It measures 142x70x 9.7 mm and weighs 171g.

Xperia XA2 will be available in single SIM and dual SIM in select markets, in four fresh colors: Silver, Black, Blue and Pink.

Engineered specifically for selfies, Xperia XA2 Ultra features 16MP with Optical Image Stabilisation and 8MP 120-degree super wide-angle dual front cameras, both with front flash, to help produce clear shots regardless of lighting or environment and for fitting more friends and surroundings into selfies.

With the same 23MP rear camera module as Xperia XA2, the large 1/2.3" Exmor RSTM for a mobile sensor is capable of ISO 12800 sensitivity for better low-light photography - and the 4K movie recording and 120fps slow-motion video capture features allow users to preserve memories and magnify moments.

The handset features Sony's most vibrant 6-inch Full HD smartphone display with a wide and accurate color gamut - built with strong and durable Corning Gorilla Glass as well.

The design language is similar between the two phones.
Just as with Xperia XA2, this smartphone also features one-touch rear fingerprint sensor and the "loop surface" design. The handset is backed by a 3580 mAh battery and it also comes with Sony's smart charging technologies. The device is powered by Qualcomm Snapdragon 630 Mobile Platform.

Other specs include 4GB RAM and either 32 or 64GB of internal storage which will be expandable up to 256 GB via micro SD card. The smartphone runs on Android Oreo 8.0. It measures 163x80x9.5 mm and weighs 210g.

Xperia XA2 Ultra will be available in single SIM and dual SIM in select markets, in four contemporary colors: Silver, Black, Blue, and Gold.

While Sony Xperia XA2 and XA2 Ultra are mid-tier smartphones, the Xperia L2 is an entry-level model. Thus the smartphone features a 5.5-inch HD screen 5.5-inch HD display.

The handset runs on Qualcomm Snapdragon 630 SoC paired with 3GB of RAM. It offers 32GB of internal storage which is further expandable up to 256GB via microSD card.

For optics, there's a 13-megapixel rear camera with f/2.0 along with an 8-megapixel ultra wide angle front sensor for 120-degree field-of-view. The Xperia L2 is fueled by a 3,300mAh battery and comes with intuitive Xperia smart charging technologies.

On the software front, it runs Android 7.1.1 Nougat out-of-the-box. Other features include USB Type-C support, rear fingerprint sensor, and 4K video recording capabilities.

Xperia L2 will launch in single SIM and dual SIM in select markets, in three colors: Black, Gold and Pink - each rendered with reflective surfaces, emphasizing the "loop surface" design.
