India Issues High-Risk Warning for Google Chrome Users: Here's How to Update to Avoid Security Threats

The Indian government has issued a serious security advisory for desktop users of Google Chrome, warning of critical vulnerabilities that could allow hackers to gain remote access to personal and corporate systems. The alert, released by CERT-In—the Indian Computer Emergency Response Team under the Ministry of Electronics & IT—affects millions of users across Windows, macOS, and Linux platforms.

The recommendation is simple: if you haven’t updated Chrome recently, do it now.

India Issues High-Risk Warning for Google Chrome Users

Older Chrome Versions Open to Remote Exploits

According to advisory CIVN-2025-0130, the vulnerabilities impact Chrome versions prior to 137.0.7151.119/.120 on Windows and macOS, and prior to 137.0.7151.119 on Linux. Two core issues have been identified in Chrome's codebase: a memory management bug in the Profiler module and an integer overflow error in the V8 JavaScript engine. Both can be exploited by malicious websites to execute harmful code without the user’s knowledge.

In simpler terms, just visiting a compromised web page could allow attackers to crash your browser, steal data, or even take control of your machine. What makes this particularly dangerous is that the attacks can happen silently, without the user realizing that anything is wrong—until it’s too late.

Why It Matters: Corporate Devices at Greater Risk

The warning isn’t just for casual users. Businesses and enterprise networks are especially vulnerable if devices in their ecosystem are running outdated versions of Chrome. A single compromised machine could potentially expose internal data or become a gateway for broader attacks.

The nature of these bugs also makes them appealing to cybercriminals looking for scalable exploits. With Chrome holding a massive share of the desktop browser market, the potential surface for attack is enormous.

Here’s How to Check and Update Your Chrome

To stay protected, users should immediately update to the latest stable version of Chrome:

  • For Windows and macOS: Version 137.0.7151.119/.120

  • For Linux: Version 137.0.7151.119

How to update Chrome:

  1. Open Google Chrome.

  2. Click the three-dot menu in the top-right corner.

  3. Navigate to Help > About Google Chrome.

  4. Chrome will automatically check for updates and begin installing the latest version.

After installation, restarting the browser is required for the update to take effect.

What Comes Next?

Security issues in widely used software like Chrome are not new, but the silent nature of these vulnerabilities is what raises concern. Given that these flaws are being actively monitored by government cybersecurity teams, it’s likely that exploitation attempts are already underway—or at least anticipated.

While the responsibility of fixing the bugs rests with Google (and the patches are already out), the onus of updating lies with the user.
