OPPO Signs Global Patent Deal with Volkswagen to Power Connected Vehicles
OPPO has signed a global patent licensing agreement with Volkswagen Group to support the development of its connected vehicle technologies.
The partnership gives Volkswagen access to OPPO’s portfolio of cellular standard-essential patents (SEPs), including critical 5G innovations, to enhance in-car connectivity and communication features.

Expanding Beyond Smartphones
The deal marks OPPO’s first bilateral patent agreement with an automotive company, signaling a strategic shift for the smartphone giant into the automotive tech landscape. While OPPO is widely known for its consumer electronics and smartphones, the company has quietly built one of the industry’s strongest SEP portfolios over the last decade.
Volkswagen’s move to license OPPO’s patented cellular technologies reflects the growing demand for robust mobile connectivity in vehicles—whether for navigation, infotainment, real-time diagnostics, or future autonomous systems.
A Win-Win Licensing Framework
Both parties emphasized the business-focused and respectful nature of the deal. Vincent Lin, OPPO’s Head of Patent Licensing, highlighted that the collaboration aligns with OPPO’s long-term commitment to fostering sustainable innovation through a healthy intellectual property (IP) ecosystem.
Robin Cefai, Chief IP Licensing Officer at Volkswagen, echoed the sentiment, describing the agreement as an example of efficient licensing practice and a sustainable solution for all parties involved.
What’s in OPPO’s Patent Portfolio?
As of March 2025, OPPO holds over 62,000 granted patents globally, with more than 113,000 total filings. These cover critical domains such as 5G, AI, imaging, video, and charging technologies.
Notably, OPPO was ranked eighth globally in 5G patent strength by LexisNexis IPlytics in January 2025. The company’s SEPs are registered in more than 40 countries and regions, reinforcing its global presence in telecom infrastructure innovation.
Why This Deal Matters
This agreement highlights how the automotive and mobile industries are increasingly intertwined. As connected cars become the norm, automakers are turning to tech companies for licensing essential cellular infrastructure that powers everything from real-time traffic updates to V2X (vehicle-to-everything) communication.
The OPPO-Volkswagen deal could also set a precedent for future licensing strategies, allowing more smartphone and tech companies to license their IP portfolios to the automotive sector.
