JioPhone effect: 4G feature phones that will soon shape up the Indian mobile market
The feature phone market remains to be sizable and lucrative one.
With the boom in the 4G connectivity and subscription in India, the mobile phone market is also witnessing a lot of changes. The entry of Reliance Jio 4G service with free voice calls and data followed by dirt cheap tariff plans brought has shaped up the telecom industry making it beneficial for the users.
After bringing in changes to the telecom market, the company stepped into the mobile phone segment with the launch of the JioPhone that is effectively free of cost. The launch of this phone has brought the feature phone market into the limelight. Though there are 450 million smartphone users in the country, the feature phone market remains to be sizable and lucrative. Having given the demand for the JioPhone among consumers, the other mobile makers have started shifting their focus towards the feature phone market segment to grab success.

BSNL teams up with Lava and Micromax
BSNL has announced that they will join hands with the domestic manufacturers such as Micromax and Lava to launch low-cost smart feature phones. According to the report, these low-cost feature phones will focus on the data plans as this is the rage right now. These phones will have bundled offers as well. Micromax is said to launch the Bharat One 4G feature phone with bundled plans from BSNL. There are reports that this feature phone will be launched in October.
Airtel to launch Rs. 2,000 smartphone
Bharti Airtel is in plans to unveil a 4G VoLTE smartphone priced below Rs. 2,000 to compete with the JioPhone. This device will be launched with bundled offers for both the prepaid and postpaid consumers. It will offer voice calls and data at competitive rates. Going by the information that we have right now, this phone will let users access Facebook and WhatsApp as well. This Airtel 4G smartphone is said to be launched before Diwali.
An advanced JioPhone could be in the making
Recently, we came across a report tipping that Reliance could be in plans to unveil an advanced variant of the JioPhone. This variant of JioPhone is said to feature apps for WhatsApp, Facebook and YouTube. The new JioPhone might have USB tethering as well to let it connect even laptops to the internet. Contradictorily, we have seen reports that the JioPhone will get a lite version of WhatsApp in the future and that it will be rolled out via a software update.
Aircel and Lava feature phones
Aircel joined hands with Lava to introduce bundled offer for the feature phone users. Under this offer, the Lava devices come with attractive benefits letting customers get 100% cashback after 24 months of using the device. An Aircel recharge of Rs. 153 will offer the users unlimited 2G data, SMS, voice calls and Music for 28 days. To get the full refund, they should recharge for Rs. 153 per month for 24 months.
