Nothing Almost Revealed Phone 4a on OnlyFans — That Says It All

There is one rule that governs every marketing decision that Nothing makes. It is not only about budget, or brand safety, or what the legal team thinks. It's simpler and more interesting than any of that.

"Would Apple or Samsung do that?" Akis Evangelidis, Co-founder and President of Nothing India, told me. "And if the answer is yes, we'd likely not do it."

That's it. That's the framework.

It sounds like a joke until you trace everything Nothing has done in public back to it. The condom in the Phone 4a teasers ahead of the launch. Carl Pei spray-painting over Apple's event invitation on social media the day before Nothing's own launch, because Apple had its March 4 event and Nothing had its reveal the very next day. The graffiti pre-painted on Nothing's own stores, including the Bangalore store that Akis now says is on track to be profitable well ahead of schedule. None of it was accidental. All of it filtered through the same question: would the other guys do this?

The answer, each time, was no. Which was precisely the point.

"We started this company because we wanted to make tech fun again," Akis said. "When the industry zigs, we zag." In a category where every brand spends crores projecting the same aspirational seriousness, Nothing keeps finding the gaps — the moves that are too weird, too irreverent, too human for a company with a real legal department to greenlight. The condom worked because Samsung would never. The spray paint worked because Apple would never. The graffiti on the stores worked because nobody in a boardroom anywhere would sign off on defacing their own retail space on purpose.

But the one that got away is the best one. "I wanted to do a design reveal via OnlyFans," Akis said. He paused for just a moment. "It would have been very fun."

It didn't happen. Something, somewhere in the process, stopped it. Though Akis didn't seem particularly at peace with the decision. Exactly where the line sits between the condom being fine and OnlyFans being a step too far is a question that probably has a complicated internal answer. But the fact that the conversation got far enough for a co-founder to bring it up unprompted, in an interview, still a little wistful about it — tells you everything about the creative temperature inside Nothing.

These are not people asking how to not offend anyone. These are people genuinely stress-testing how far the filter goes. The filter says: would Apple do this? OnlyFans, apparently, is where even Nothing found the edge.
