OnePlus Open vs Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 5: Display
The Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 5 uses a smaller main and cover display as compared to the OnePlus Open. Additionally, the OnePlus Open's primary display also features a more pleasing aspect ratio. However, the OnePlus Open offers brighter main and cover displays with a higher resolution when pitted against the Galaxy Z Fold 5.
OnePlus Open vs Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 5: Performance & Software
While both phones use the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 chipset, the Galaxy Z Fold 5 use custom version of the chip that is specifically designed for Samsung smartphones. However, overall performance won't vary between the two devices.
We have tested out Galaxy foldables in the past and Samsung does offer a seamless experience. On paper, the software experience on the OnePlus Open promises to offer a glitch-free experience, although we'll reserve final judgement when we review the device.
For now, Samsung's experience with foldables should give the Galaxy Z Fold 5 the edge. Additionally, Samsung's S Pen support brings more utility to the foldable form factor and enhances the overall experience.
OnePlus Open vs Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 5: Battery
In terms of battery capacity, the OnePlus Open has a larger battery and comes with faster wired charging. However, the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 5 also supports fast charging as well as wireless charging.
Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 5 vs OnePlus Open: Cameras
Both phones feature similar rear triple-camera setups on the back. But while OnePlus has opted for three high-res sensors, Samsung goes the tried and tested route, utilizing the same cameras from the Galaxy S23. Moreover, both the main and telephoto units on the
OnePlus Open and Galaxy Z Fold 5 support OIS. We have yet to test the cameras on the OnePlus Open, but it is safe to say that the cameras on the Galaxy Z Fold 5 are flagship-grade. Additionally, the Galaxy Z Fold 5 also supports 8K video recording. The one advantage that the OnePlus offers is the internal selfie camera at 20 MP as opposed to 4 MP on the Galaxy Z Fold 5.
However, the 4 MP camera on the main foldable screen here is designed for video calling and considering the primary rear cameras can be used for selfies on both phones, there's no point comparing selfie cameras here. Despite the flagship camera hardware, we'd have to side with Samsung here for its experience.
OnePlus Open vs Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 5: Experience
For a first iteration, the OnePlus Open feels almost perfect. However, it is worth noting that the OnePlus Open is modelled on the Oppo Find N3. In fact, it is literally the same device. So considering its partnership with Oppo, OnePlus can hardly be considered as a novice in the segment. Samsung, on the other hand, is a leader in the foldable smartphone game by a mile.
Conclusion
When it comes to hardware, the OnePlus Open is undoubtedly an excellent foldable smartphone and can easily take on the Galaxy Z Fold 5. But hardware should never be your primary reason to buy a foldable smartphone. However, experience should always be your main priority when considering a foldable smartphone.
And now foldable smartphone offers the same experience as the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 5, which undoubtedly offers the best transition between smartphone and tablet. Moreover, Samsung's software also offers the most utility on a foldable and has a history of success in this relatively new smartphone category.
