OPPO Releases Android 17-Based ColorOS 17 Update: Check New AI Features, Performance Boosts and Rollout Dates

OPPO has officially introduced ColorOS 17 at its developer conference in China, with the Android 17-based software update bringing a redesigned interface, performance improvements, new AI features and expanded cross-device connectivity. The update also marks a major change for Realme, as the company has confirmed that Realme UI is being discontinued in favour of ColorOS on supported devices.

ColorOS 17 will initially roll out in China across OPPO, OnePlus and Realme smartphones, along with tablets, smartwatches and other connected products. However, OPPO has not yet announced a global or India-specific rollout timeline.

ColorOS 17 Brings Fluid Design and Performance Improvements

One of the biggest changes in ColorOS 17 is the new Fluid Design framework. OPPO says it introduces smoother animations, luminous visual effects and more responsive system feedback.

The software also features a new Polar Light Engine, which the company claims can reduce app start-up and runtime memory usage by 25 percent. OPPO says the engine can also reduce rendering workload by 30 percent.

Another system-level upgrade is the Tidal Engine, which handles personalised resource scheduling. According to OPPO, it can improve background app retention stability by 55.6 percent. The company also claims 50 percent faster scrolling and loading in third-party apps, 30 percent faster mini-program launches and 15 percent faster app switching.

These figures are based on OPPO's internal testing, so real-world performance may vary depending on the device, applications and software optimisation.

OPPO also claims that supported devices can deliver up to six years of smooth performance, although the actual software support period will depend on the individual model and market.

New AI Tools Focus on Photos, Notes and Accessibility

ColorOS 17 introduces an AI Photo Editor with tools for removing unwanted objects, reducing motion blur and adjusting image colours and tones. Compatible devices and displays will also gain native 2K ProXDR imaging support.

Another feature, Reference Image Replication, allows users to apply the visual style of one image to another. OPPO says its Da Vinci Visual Understanding Model uses six specialised models covering areas such as lighting, image quality, composition, colour, portraits and individual image elements.

The redesigned AI Notes app can generate information overviews and offers one-tap sharing. An Inspiration Moment feature can resurface saved ideas, while users can simultaneously record audio, write notes and capture photos.

OPPO has also introduced an AI Assistant Ball, a lightweight accessory weighing 9.8 grams with up to 24 hours of battery life. It can display information with a short press, while a long press allows users to ask questions and receive proactive results through supported services.

Smart Screen Reading can read on-screen content aloud, while an AI-powered anti-fraud system is designed to identify potentially suspicious activity using personalised behaviour patterns.

Care Mode and Xiaobu AI Expand the Ecosystem

ColorOS 17 adds Care Mode, which brings accessibility and safety-related settings together for easier access. The feature could be useful for children, elderly users or people who prefer a simplified device setup.

In China, OPPO is also expanding its Xiaobu AI assistant. Xiaobu Suggestions supports more than 700 service scenarios, while Xiaobu Space manages personal information and tasks.

The assistant can also provide travel-related information through AI Fluid Cloud navigation. Xiaobu Call adds reminders for airport and high-speed railway station pick-ups.

However, several Xiaobu features rely on Chinese services and infrastructure. It remains unclear which of these capabilities will be available on international versions of ColorOS 17.

ColorOS 17 Improves Cross-device Connectivity

OPPO is positioning ColorOS 17 as an ecosystem platform rather than simply a smartphone interface. The update adds Car+ connectivity, including walking-navigation handover, while compatible cameras can transfer photos to connected devices.

Earphones can support AI conversation interpretation, and smartwatches can share exercise information with phones and tablets. OPPO is also introducing features such as a FatMax fat-burning mode and customisable modular watch faces.

Fluid Cloud information can be synchronised across supported devices, allowing users to access relevant information across phones, tablets, watches and other connected products.

ColorOS 17 Rollout: First Devices and Dates

The first products to ship with ColorOS 17 will include the upcoming OPPO Find X10 series, OnePlus 16 and OPPO Watch S2.

For existing devices in China, the stable rollout begins on October 8, 2026, with models including the OPPO Find N6 series, Find X9 series, OnePlus 15 series and Realme GT 8 Pro series.

The second phase begins on October 16, covering additional OPPO Find and Pad models, OnePlus 13 series and Pad 3 Pro, and Realme GT 7 Pro, GT 8 and Neo8 models.

More eligible OPPO, OnePlus and Realme smartphones, tablets and watches will receive the update through November and December 2026, with additional devices scheduled for the first quarter of 2027.

For now, this roadmap applies to China only. OPPO, OnePlus and Realme have yet to confirm an official ColorOS 17 rollout schedule for India and other international markets
