Google Pixel 9 Pro vs iPhone 16 Pro: Here's How Much More Apple Spends to Build Its Latest Flagship

Apple's iPhone 16 Pro and Google's Pixel 9 Pro both bring fresh features and high-end specs, yet they differ significantly in production costs. While Apple spends more on premium components, resulting in a higher BOM, Google focuses on affordability with a cost-efficient approach.

Here's a look at how each brand's strategy shapes their flagship devices.

Pixel 9 Pro vs iPhone 16 Pro: Why Apple’s Flagship Costs More to Build

A Look at the iPhone 16 Pro and Pro Max Production Costs

Apple's iPhone 16 Pro Max, with a retail price that places it firmly in the premium category, actually costs significantly less to produce. According to TD Cowen via Wccftech, the BOM for the 256GB iPhone 16 Pro Max is around $485, covering everything from components and assembly to packaging. This is only about one-third of the price that consumers pay, highlighting Apple's heavy investment in high-quality materials and advanced technology while maintaining significant profit margins.

When comparing the BOM of the iPhone 16 Pro Max to its predecessor, the iPhone 15 Pro Max, there's an increase of $32, primarily attributed to upgraded components. The camera system, for instance, now includes a 48MP ultrawide camera and accounts for 16% of the BOM. The device's A18 Pro chip and taller LTPO OLED display each add about $5 to the production cost, while enhancements like Wi-Fi 7 and a new camera button contribute to incremental cost increases.

Google's Budget-Friendly Approach with the Pixel 9 Pro

In contrast, according to a report from Nikkei (via Gizmochina), Google has taken a more cost-conscious approach with the Pixel 9 Pro, bringing its BOM to an estimated $406, which is about 11% less than that of the Pixel 8 Pro. The Pixel's BOM cuts costs in key areas like the display and camera without compromising on performance. Google spends around $75 on the Pixel 9 Pro's Samsung-made display and $61 on the camera setup-significantly lower than Apple's BOM allocation for similar components in the iPhone 16 Pro Max.

Interestingly, Google chose to invest a bit more in its Tensor G4 processor, bringing its cost to about $80. This custom-designed chip optimizes the Pixel's AI-driven features, such as image processing and voice recognition, which contribute to its competitive edge in software. Although the Tensor G4's BOM is still less than Apple's $135 A18 Pro chip, it reflects Google's goal of balancing cost efficiency with performance.

Camera and Display Investments: Quality vs. Cost

Apple and Google both invest heavily in cameras and displays, though with distinct strategies. Apple's focus on advanced hardware, such as the 48MP ultrawide camera and LTPO OLED screen, explains the $110 display cost and $91 camera cost for the iPhone 16 Pro Max. Google, however, relies more on software to maximize the performance of its relatively modest hardware. The Pixel's camera, priced at $61, leverages Google's AI capabilities to produce top-tier images without high BOM costs.

For display, the iPhone 16 Pro Max comes in at 6.9 inches, slightly taller than its predecessor, which also accounts for its higher cost. Google, meanwhile, opts for a more budget-friendly display that still offers excellent visuals for the Pixel experience.

Different Paths to Top-Tier Quality

Although the Pixel 9 Pro's lower production costs reflect Google's cost-saving choices on components like the display and camera, this doesn't translate to a dip in quality. The Pixel series remains highly regarded for its outstanding photography, driven by Google's advanced AI software, and provides a seamless user experience without inflating the price.

Both the Pixel 9 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro bring top-tier features to the table-whether you prefer Apple or Google, both smartphones are exceptional choices that deliver quality without compromise.
