Vivo X Fold 3 Pro vs OnePlus Open: Which is the Best Foldable Smartphone in India (2024)?

Vivo recently released its first foldable smartphone in India. The Vivo X Fold 3 Pro is India's slimmest foldable smartphone and is the only one to use the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 chipset, making it the most powerful foldable in the country so far.

However, the Vivo X Fold 3 Pro isn't without competition, the primary among it being the OnePlus Open. Despite the lack of experience as compared to Samsung, the OnePlus Open earned its place as the best foldable smartphone in 2023 on our list. But how does it compare against the Vivo X Fold 3 Pro; let's find out!

Design & Build

The Vivo X Fold 3 Pro is the sleeker of the two phones, measuring just 11.2mm thick when folded and 5.2mm when unfolded. Comparatively, the OnePlus Open measures 11.7mm thick when folded and 5.8mm when unfolded.

The Vivo X Fold 3 Pro is slightly lighter as well, weighing 236 grams compared to the OnePlus Open, which sits at 239 or 245 grams depending on the model. This could be down to the carbon fiber hinge on the X Fold 3 Pro.

In terms of usability, both the Vivo X Fold 3 Pro and OnePlus Open's crease is nearly invisible. Moreover, both phones feature a comfortable aspect ratio for use when unfolded, although we can safely safe that the OnePlus Open offers the perfect phablet form factor.

The Vivo X Fold 3 Pro features a superior IPX8 rating for resistance to water as compared to the IPX4 splash resistance on the OnePlus Open. Both the Vivo X Fold 3 Pro and OnePlus Open feature glass back panels and metal frames, although the latter also comes in a vegan leather option.

Display

Both the inner and outer displays on the Vivo X Fold 3 Pro are slightly larger than the OnePlus Open. In terms of display resolution, there's nothing separating the two phones. Both foldables also use LTPO technology on both their outer and inner screens, while offering both HDR10+ and Dolby Vision support.

The OnePlus Open features newer LTPO technology, which should offer better power consumption. On the other hand, the Vivo X Fold 3 Pro offers a brighter panel, capable of achieving a peak brightness of 4,500 nits, compared to 2,800 nits on the Open.

Performance

The Vivo X Fold 3 Pro's Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 chipset gives it a clear advantage in terms of performance. Moreover, the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 SoC also enables on-device AI performance, so expect more AI features to hit the Vivo X Fold 3 Pro.

There's no doubt that the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 chip is plenty powerful and promises a lag-free experience. The Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 SoC also offers better graphics performance for gaming. The new SD 8 Gen 3 chip also brings gains in power efficiency.

Battery & Software

While the OnePlus Open has a relatively large battery for a foldable smartphone, it is dwarfed by the cell on the Vivo X Fold 3 Pro. Additionally, the Vivo X Fold 3 Pro not only offers faster wired charging, it also supports super-fast wireless charging. Both foldables support reserve wired charging, but the X Fold 3 Pro also offers reserve wireless charging.

On the software side, the Vivo X Fold 3 Pro runs Android 14-based Funtouch OS 14 out of the box. And while the OnePlus Open does run Android 13 out of the box, it has since received the Android 14 update. We haven't tested out the Vivo X Fold 3 Pro yet, although OnePlus offers a ton of software features and a clean UI experience.

Cameras

The Vivo X Fold 3 Pro features a 50 MP "Ultra-Sensing" OmniVision OV50H primary sensor with an f/1.68 aperture and OIS support. The main camera is accompanied by a 64 MP OV64B periscope lens with an f/2.57 aperture, OIS support, and 3x optical zoom as well as a 50 MP Samsung JN1 ultrawide lens.

The rear camera setup on the Vivo X Fold 3 Pro is co-developed with Zeiss. Additionally, the camera lenses feature Zeiss T* lens coating. The X Fold 3 Pro also features a pair of 32 MP selfie cameras with an f/2.4 aperture, although they only support video recording at 1080p resolution.

The OnePlus Open features a 48 MP primary Sony primary sensor with an f/1.7 aperture and OIS support. The rear camera setup also features a 64 MP periscope lens with an f/2.6 aperture and 3x optical zoom and a 48 MP ultrawide lens with an f/2.2 aperture.

The OnePlus Open's rear cameras are fine-tuned by Hasselblad. Up front, the OnePlus Open opts for a 20 MP camera on the inner display and a 32 MP front shooter on the cover screen. On the flip side, the OnePlus Open's front camera supports 4K video recording at 30fps.

While we haven't tested the cameras on the Vivo X Fold 3 Pro, the OnePlus Open delivers solid performance across all lighting scenarios. However, on paper, Vivo does have an edge. Moreover, Vivo has leveraged its partnership with Zeiss better than OnePlus and Hasselblad. The Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 chip also brings an upgraded ISP over its predecessor.

Vivo X Fold 3 Pro vs OnePlus Open: Conclusion

Based on specifications alone, the Vivo X Fold 3 Pro offers a major advantage over the OnePlus Open. The X Fold 3 Pro features a larger and brighter display. It also packs a larger battery with faster charging support. Vivo also has the edge in terms of optics. Moreover, it is sleeker and offers superior water resistance.

The OnePlus Open does offer the edge in terms of software as Oxygen OS is more preferrable than Funtouch OS. Despite the higher price, the Vivo X Fold 3 Pro holds a clear advantage over the OnePlus Open, at least on paper. While we do think the extra price for the X Fold 3 Pro is worth it, the OnePlus Open isn't too far off the mark.
