Apple may launch a foldable iPhone in 2020

A patent filed by Apple had previously revealed that the company intends to make an iPhone that can open and close like a book.


Could foldable phones be the future of smartphones? Well, Apple thinks so. The company is said to be working on a foldable iPhone model which will be launched by the year 2020. Bank of America Merrill Lynch, according to a report by CNBC, stated that the Cupertino giant is working closely with its Asian partners to unveil the foldable iPhone in 2020.

Analyst Wamsi Mohan further said in a client note that the upcoming iPhone could double as a tablet. It is worth mentioning that he made the note after meeting sever Apple supply chain in the Asian region. This is not the first time when the company is rumored to be prepping for the launch of a foldable iPhone model.

A previous report had suggested that Apple is working with LG display to build a foldable iPhone. LG Display was said to be creating an OLED screen that is foldable. Interestingly, this report had also claimed that the production of the foldable OLED panel would start in early 2019 so that the foldable iPhone get launched in the following year.

In November last year, we came across a patent filed by Apple. The patent revealed that the company intends to make an iPhone that can open and close like a book. Though a filed patent doesn't necessarily mean that the product will see the light of day, it is good to know what kind of technology the company is experimenting with.

Not only Apple, Samsung is also working on a foldable smartphone (unofficially dubbed as Galaxy X). DJ Koh, CEO of Samsung's Mobile Division, has confirmed that the company is making progress on the Galaxy X and it won't be just a gimmick.

In other news, Apple is expected to launch three iPhones this year. Two OLED models with display sizes of 5.8 inches and 6.5 inches. The third one will reportedly be an LCD model with display size of 6.1 inches. Additionally, the company is also rumored to launch the successor of iPhone SE sometime this year. We have reported earlier today that the iPhone SE 2 could be exclusively made in India.
