Apple may not launch a second-generation iPhone SE at all believes analyst
Recent reports have been claiming Apple will launch a successor of iPhone SE in either May or June this year.
Apple is rumored to have been working on a second-generation iPhone SE from a long time now. DigiTimes Research's senior analyst Luke Lin recently predicted that the iPhone SE 2 would get unveiled in either May or June. The analyst even shed some light on the specifications of the phone, which is said to feature wireless charging support.
KGI Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, however, thinks differently. In a new research note, he has expressed its doubt on rumors about the iPhone SE 2 getting launched in the H2 2018. Kuo believes the Cupertino-giant doesn't have enough development resources left to build another iPhone, as it is already planning to launch three iPhones in fall this year. Hence, Apple is unlikely to launch the a successor of the iPhone SE.
"With three new models in the pipeline for the second half of 2018, we believe Apple may have used up its development resources. Also, we think the firm will do all it can to avoid repeating the mistake of a shipment delay for the three new models. As such, we believe Apple is unlikely to have enough spare resources to develop a new iPhone model for launch in 2Q18," reads an excerpt from the research note, obtained by MacRumors.
That being said, if Apple does come up with a second-generation iPhone SE, Kuo believes it will have few outward-facing changes. He further predicts instead of carrying iPhone X-like features like an edge-to-edge screen, Face ID and wireless charging support, the phone may just be powered by a faster processor. Naturally, the iPhone SE 2 will carry cheap price tag, targeted at the entry-level segment.
The analyst expects the 2018 lineup of iPhones will consist of three models; a second-generation iPhone X with a 5.8-inch OLED screen, a large 6.5-inch OLED variant dubbed as iPhone X Plus, and a lower-priced 6.1-inch iPhone with LCD display.
Ming-Chi Kuo can be considered as a trusted source when you need about Apple's iPhones. There has been many instances in the past, where he predicted things accurately, months before the official launch. So chances are he is right with his predictions this time as well.
