Apple’s iPhone 16 Lineup Could Come With a New Capture Button: Report

According to a new report from The Information, the upcoming iPhone 16 series will bid farewell to the traditional mute button, introducing a new Capture Button as a replacement. Unlike traditional shutter buttons, this multifunctional button promises to be a hub for various photography-related functions.

Zoom and Focus Adjustment at Your Fingertips

The Capture Button is intended to be a one-stop shop for photography enthusiasts, providing simple access to essential features. Users can easily make zoom and focus adjustments with simple left and right gestures on the button, eliminating the need for on-screen options.

Mechanical Design for a Tactile Experience

Unlike solid-state buttons, the Capture Button on the iPhone 16 will be mechanical, providing users with a tactile experience. The button is expected to respond to applied pressure, allowing for nuanced interactions. A light press will facilitate focus adjustment, while a slightly heavier press will activate the shutter for capturing moments.

Strategic Placement for Accessibility

Apple has reportedly placed the Capture Button on the right side of the iPhone, below the power button. This strategic placement ensures easy accessibility without requiring users to stretch their fingers or adjust their grip, making it a user-friendly addition to the device.

Pro Series Exclusive?

Although it is thought that the Capture Button will debut on the iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max, which are known for their high-end features, there are lingering rumors that it may be available across the entire iPhone 16 lineup. Apple's history of testing features across its different models leaves room for speculation, and only time will tell whether the Capture Button will be exclusive to the Pro models.

What Else to Expect

In addition to the new Capture Button, the iPhone 16 lineup is rumored to include several other upgrades. The non-Pro models are expected to receive an increase in RAM to 8GB, and both the iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Plus may support WiFi 6E. The Pro models could see improvements in 5G connectivity thanks to the new Qualcomm Snapdragon X75 5G modem, and the iPhone 16 Pro may feature a Tetraprism lens with up to 5x optical zoom.
