Apple Wins Big At MWC GLOMO Awards, iPhone 14 Pro Awarded Best Device

With the Mobile World Congress Barcelona coming to a close this year, the Global Mobile Awards (GLOMO) recipients have been announced. They include Apple, TCL, and Motorola. The GLOMO awards are issued every year across different categories such as Mobile Technologies, Digital Everything, Devices, Tech4Good, and Government Leadership. Apple was the recipient of this year's Devices category.

Apple iPhone 14 Pro Wins GLOMO Award

The Apple iPhone 14 Pro was given the Best Smartphone award, beating stalwarts such as the Google Pixel 7 Pro, Nothing Phone (1), Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 4, and the Galaxy Z Fold 4. The award for best smartphone is determined combining outstanding performance, innovation, and leadership as determined through assessment of smartphones on the market during the period January 2022 to December 2022, by world leading independent analysts, journalists, and influencers.

Apple also won the award for Disruptive Device Innovation for the emergency SOS via satellite feature in the iPhone 14 models, available in the US and a few other countries. The feature allows iPhone 14 users to communicate seeking help in case of emergency when there are no mobile networks available.

Apple's adoption of satcomm spurred quick uptake of the technology with T-Mobile in the US announcing a partnership with Elon Musk's SpaceX to fill dead zones in the country, while MediaTek announced that its future chipsets will support satellite data connections.

In this category, Apple beat the Google Tensor 2 chip, the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2, and the Sony IMX989 camera sensor.

Motorola Defy Wins Best in Show Award

On a similar note, Motorola stole the show with the 'Best in Show' award going to the Motorola Defy Satellite Link, which runs on a MediaTek chip, and uses Bluetooth to connect to a smartphone, allowing users to send SMS messages whenever there is a clear line of sight of the sky.

Motorola beat the likes of Honor Magic Vs, Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra, and the Oppo Find N2 Flip. The award was given based on the best-of-the-best products on show, and was considered by a select group of judges physically present at the show.
