Google will begin manufacturing smartphones in India from 2024, starting with the Pixel 8

Google has unveiled its plans to manufacture its line of Pixel smartphones in India. Initially, the technology giant will focus on the production of the Pixel 8, with the first batch of these smartphones anticipated to hit the market in 2024.

The Pixel 8 was previously launched globally earlier this month, along with its more upscale counterpart, the Pixel 8 Pro. Google's move to begin manufacturing its Pixel range in India marks a significant step in expanding its foothold in the nation.

Google to rival Apple and Samsung

Equipped with a Google Tensor G3 chip and a Titan M2 security chip, the Pixel 8 has got some serious upgrades over its predecessor. The new vanilla Pixel 8 gets a new chipset, an improved primary camera, a super-smooth display, and leading software support.

Google's venture to manufacture its Pixel smartphones in India is deemed as a strategic move to expand its market and compete with rival brands Apple and Samsung, who also assemble some of their units in the nation.

This undertaking aligns with Google's aspirations declared during the Google for India 2023 event. In addition to its manufacturing plans, Google aims to extend the reach of its service network throughout the country.

Google Pixel 8 Production in India

At present, Google provides support through 28 service centers based in 27 cities in collaboration with F1 Info Solutions. Senior VP for Devices and Services, Rick Osterloh, refers to this development as an early stride towards amplifying their device production capability to cater to the increasing demand for Pixel smartphones in India.

Despite the confirmation for building the Pixel line in India, it remains unclear as to whether the pricing of the Pixel smartphones will drop due to the local production. Meanwhile, the Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro are set to gain a hardware update that will allow lossless USB audio in the immediate future.

With a focus on enhancing its service network and meeting India's growing demand for Pixel smartphones, Google joins the race with fellow competitors Samsung and Apple in capitalizing the burgeoning smartphone market in the country.
