Google Pixel 2 goes through rigorous durability test on JerryRigEverything
The Google Pixel 2 fails to deliver a good performance in the durability test.
The YouTube channel JerryRigEverything can be considered as a benchmark when it comes to testing the durability of smartphones. The latest one to undergo this rigorous test is the Google Pixel 2.
As some of you may know, the durability test comprises of three different phases. Starting off with the scratch test, the Google Pixel 2's display didn't encounter any scratches until the level 6 on the Mohs Hardness Test. Well, it was quite expected as the phone's display is covered with Corning Gorilla Glass 5 on top. Since the front camera is also protected by the Gorilla Glass 5, it doesn't get scratches easily.
Despite coming with a metal unibody, the Google Pixel 2 has a "premium hybrid coating" on its back. Hence, the rear panel of the smartphone did not do well against the razor used in the scratch test. Scratches started appearing on level 3. Moreover, unlike many phones, the Pixel 2's fingerprint scanner loses all its functionality once scratched.
On the bright side, the primary camera lens proved to be resistant to scratches. So even if users drop their phones on the ground, the rear-facing camera should work just fine.
Moving ahead, the Google Pixel 2 performed poorly in the burn test. It features an OLED display which started getting burn marks after 15 seconds in the test. It should be noted that the damage made to the display is irreversible.
Lastly, the YouTuber proves in the bend test that the Pixel 2 can be easily bended. The phone's frame split along the plastic antenna lines, which is the weakest spot of the device. While the Google Pixel 2 still went on to function, you should not keep in the pockets of your skinny jeans.
Coming to the conclusion, the Pixel 2 is not impressive in terms of durability. Hopefully, Google takes cues from this video and makes some improvements in the third generation of Pixel phones.
