Google Pixel 2 XL scores 6 out of 10 in repairability test
The Pixel 2 XL scores better than the likes of Samsung Galaxy Note 8, Galaxy S8 duo.
The second generation Google Pixel devices are yet to hit the shelves. If you are planning to buy the new Pixel 2 XL, you may want to check out the phone's teardown guide as well as its repairability score.
Thanks to the website iFixit, many interesting facts have been revealed from the teardown. To start with, the Google Pixel 2 XL's components are pretty modular. Well, this also means some parts of the smartphone will be really difficult to replace. For instance, if its battery stops working in your unit, you would have to take help of a professional.
This is because the Google Pixel 2 XL's battery is tightly walled-in. Moreover, it doesn't have the pull-tab adhesive under the battery like that of the original Pixel devices. Hence, separating the battery from the adhesive is not an easy task. On the positive side, at 13.6 Wh, the smartphone's battery capacity is slightly better as compared to last years Pixel XL.
iFixit was not too happy with the display of the Pixel 2 XL. However, since LG used foam to secure the phone's display, it is not that difficult to detach it for repairing.
Coming to the upsides, the smartphone should be appreciated for its modularity with parts snapped onto the motherboard. This indicates minor issues can be repaired without any hassle. You wouldn't need to replace the entire motherboard as you can just pull out the bad part and replace it.
What's more, the USB Type-C port seems easily repairable as well.
Overall, the Google Pixel 2 XL manages to achieve a repairability score of 6/10, which is better than the likes of Samsung Galaxy Note 8, Galaxy S8 duo.
