Google Pixel 8 Goes Desi: Made-in-India Phones Hit Production Lines
Google is stepping up its commitment to the Indian market by rolling out the first batch of "Made in India" Pixel 8 smartphones. This move comes just ahead of the Pixel 9 series launch, potentially paving the way for more affordable Pixel phones in the future.
From Global to Local Production
Previously, Google relied heavily on China for Pixel production. However, this announcement marks a significant shift in their supply chain strategy. Google has partnered with Foxconn and Dixon subsidiary Padget Electronics to manufacture the Pixel 8 in India.

This move aligns with the Indian government's Production-Linked Incentive (PLI) scheme, which encourages smartphone makers to assemble phones locally.
Benefits All Around
The shift to local production offers several advantages. Firstly, it could lead to lower prices for Pixel phones in India. Currently, Pixel 8 devices start at Rs 75,999 due to high import duties. Locally-made Pixels could potentially bypass these costs, making them more accessible to Indian consumers.
Secondly, this move aligns with Google's goal of expanding its Pixel market share in India. The country has seen a surge in Pixel popularity, and Google aims to capitalize on this demand by establishing a local production base.
What's Next?
While only the Pixel 8 (review) has begun production in India so far, it's a promising first step. With the Pixel 9 series launching globally today on August 13th and in India on August 14th, it remains to be seen if Google plans to follow suit with local production for their newer flagship.
