Google Pixel Phones Will Get Smarter About Overheating With Upcoming “Adaptive Thermal” Feature
Anyone who's ever used their phone on a hot day knows the struggle - the device gets uncomfortably warm, performance slows down, and sometimes, it even shuts down completely. Overheating can be a serious issue for smartphones, damaging the battery and internal components. Google is taking steps to address this concern with the introduction of a new feature called "Adaptive Thermal" for Pixel phones.
What is Adaptive Thermal?
Discovered within the code of Google's Device Health Services app (thanks to a teardown by Android Authority), Adaptive Thermal functions as a smart temperature management system. It works behind the scenes to monitor your Pixel phone's battery temperature and take action when things start to get a little too toasty.

Keeping Your Pixel Cool
Here's how Adaptive Thermal tackles overheating:
- Pre-emptive Alerts: When the battery temperature reaches a concerning level (around 49 degrees Celsius or 120 degrees Fahrenheit), Adaptive Thermal throws you a notification. This alert lets you know your phone is overheating and provides some immediate steps to cool it down. These suggestions might include moving the phone out of direct sunlight, closing any power-hungry applications you're not using, or finding a cooler environment.
- Detailed Care Steps: The notification goes beyond just a basic warning. Tapping a "See Care Steps" button reveals more specific recommendations for cooling your Pixel phone. This could involve the phone itself taking some actions, such as temporarily reducing its processing speed to generate less heat. Adaptive Thermal might also suggest turning off the 5G network, which can consume more power and contribute to heat generation. Additionally, the system might recommend improving air circulation around the phone by placing it on a flat surface or in a well-ventilated area.
- Constant Monitoring and Emergency State: Adaptive Thermal doesn't just issue a one-time warning and forget about it. The system continuously monitors the battery temperature. If the temperature remains high and climbs to 52 degrees Celsius (around 126 degrees Fahrenheit), the feature enters an "emergency" state. While the exact actions taken at this stage are not entirely clear, it's likely that more aggressive cooling measures are implemented to protect the phone.
- Shutdown Warning: As a last resort, if the battery temperature reaches a critical level (around 55 degrees Celsius or 131 degrees Fahrenheit), Adaptive Thermal issues a 30-second warning before automatically shutting down the phone. This drastic step is a necessary failsafe to prevent permanent damage from overheating.
User Tips for Keeping Cool
While Adaptive Thermal is a welcome addition, it's important to remember that it's still under development. Even without the new system, there are steps you can take to prevent your Pixel phone from overheating in the first place:
- Avoid Direct Sunlight: Leaving your phone baking in the sun is a recipe for overheating. Keep it shaded whenever possible, especially on hot days.
- Manage Power-Hungry Apps: Applications like games and video players can tax your phone's resources and generate heat. Close any apps you're not actively using to help keep things cool.
- Mind Your Environment: If you're using your phone in a hot and stuffy environment, try to find a cooler location. This could be moving indoors with air conditioning or simply stepping into the shade.
By combining these user tips with the upcoming Adaptive Thermal feature, Pixel users can expect a more reliable and comfortable smartphone experience, free from the worries of overheating.
