HMD files for Asha trademark; new phones coming soon?
Do you still remember the Asha lineup of feature phones from Nokia? It looks like HMD Global is in plans to bring back this lineup from the past for us. Notably, the Asha brand of phones belonged to Nokia but was transferred to Microsoft after the acquisition. Given that HMD Global has the license to make Nokia phones now, the Asha branding has also been transferred to Nokia. Already, we saw the Nokia 3310 get a redesign in the last year and now it looks like it is time for the Asha brand of phones.
According to a report by NokiaMob, HMD Global has registered for a new trademark at EU's IP Office. The trademark was originally registered at EUIPO in November 2011. Going by the same, it looks like HMD is not going to stop doing better in the future. However, there is no official announcement from the Finnish company regarding the same and it remains unclear how the Asha trademark will be used.
If we take it that HMD Global might come up with the new Nokia Asha smart feature phones in the current era, then these will be focused to fill the gap between feature phones and smartphones. Right now, the mobile market is flooded with a lot of 4G enabled feature phones along with bundled plans from the telecom operators and one such device is the Reliance JioPhone. So we need to wait and watch if the Asha lineup of phones will be successful for the company in this scenario.
HMD Global has already launched the Nokia 3310 in 2G and 3G variants and is prepping a 4G variant of the feature phone as well. The company is also rumored to arrive with an entry-level smartphone called Nokia 1 running Android Go based on Android Oreo. This smartphone was recently leaked via hands-on images and is said to feature 1GB RAM and 16GB storage space.
With these devices from HMD coming to fill up the entry-level market segment, we are still clueless if the company will launch new Asha phones or revive the existing ones in the lineup. And, only time can answer this query.
