Will Honor 7X’s Face Unlock be as secure as Face ID in iPhone X?
Honor 7X is one of the bestselling affordable smartphones in the country. The device does have highlights such as a dual camera setup, a full-screen design with 18:9 aspect ratio display, a good battery backup and more. However, it the device misses out some features those are seen in many other devices.
At the CES 2018, Huawei's sub-brand Honor had announced that the company will add the Face Unlock facial recognition feature to the budget smartphone soon. Honor 7X does not have any dedicated facial recognition sensor as seen on the iPhone X, the first phone to arrive with this feature. For this reason, the device will use software algorithms and the selfie camera at the front to recognize the user's face.
The company is yet to disclose when this update will reach the Honor 7X but we can expect the same to be rolled out as a part of the Android 8.0 Oreo based EMUI update. This update can be expected to hit the smartphone sometime in the first quarter of this year.
Why Face Unlock?
Face Unlock is nothing but the facial recognition feature. This trend has caught up ever since the Apple iPhone X went official. After Apple, OnePlus popularized the same by incorporating the feature in the OnePlus 5T. Now, all the smartphone manufacturers are trying to implement the same in their upcoming smartphones, thereby making the face unlock feature prominent in the industry.
Will it be as secure as in iPhone X?
The Face ID on Apple iPhone X is secure as the device uses special sensors to recognize the user's face. And, not all the other devices with the face unlock feature can render the same level of security, especially those that use software algorithms to achieve the same might not be as secure as the Face ID. So we need to wait to know if the Face Unlock feature on Honor 7X will be secure enough as the Face ID.

Facial recognition could be the next big thing in biometric security. Apart from smartphones, this technology already exists in banking apps and other such sensitive industries. The face of the user can be the identity that will replace passwords and PINs that can be easily forgotten or tricked when the device is lost or stolen. Even the security experts claim that this feature can make consumers safer.
