iPhone 17 Air Could Be Apple's Thinnest Phone at Just 6mm
The upcoming iPhone 17, rumored to be named either "Air" or "Slim," is already generating buzz with its anticipated design overhaul. According to Jeff Pu, an analyst at Haitong International Tech Research (via MacRumors), the iPhone 17 Air could set a new benchmark for Apple's smartphone design by measuring just 6mm thick, surpassing the previous record of 6.9mm held by the iPhone 6.
A Slimmer Design, a Bold Reduction
For comparison, Apple's current models, the iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Pro, are 7.8mm and 8.25mm thick, respectively. If Apple achieves this rumored 6mm thickness for the iPhone 17 Air, it would represent a substantial reduction in bulk, making it approximately three-quarters the thickness of its predecessors.

Balancing Design and Functionality
Pushing the boundaries of smartphone thinness inevitably raises questions about performance trade-offs. Apple will need to address challenges such as battery capacity, thermal management, and overall structural durability to ensure the device meets user expectations.
While some enthusiasts may have hoped for an even thinner design, the 6mm milestone still places the iPhone 17 Air among the sleekest consumer electronics, second only to devices like the 5.1mm-thick 13-inch iPad Pro and the 5.4mm iPod Nano.
Powered by the Next-Gen A19 Chip
The iPhone 17 lineup, including the Air model, will be the first to feature Apple's A19 and A19 Pro chips. Built on TSMC's advanced third-generation 3nm process, known as 'N3P', these chips promise higher transistor density, resulting in improved performance and greater energy efficiency.
The standard iPhone 17 and 17 Air are expected to include the A19 chip, while the Pro models will likely incorporate the more powerful A19 Pro variant. This division maintains Apple's approach of offering differentiated performance levels across its iPhone lineup.
Updated Camera and Display Features
Rumored to feature a 6.6-inch display with a 120Hz refresh rate, the iPhone 17 Air will also bring updates to its camera setup. Reports suggest a single 48-megapixel rear camera, a departure from the multi-camera arrays seen in current Pro models. Additionally, a 24-megapixel front camera, 8GB of RAM, and an aluminum frame could further define the iPhone 17 Air's design, focusing on lightweight durability.
One of the more intriguing updates is Apple's reported inclusion of a proprietary 5G modem, signaling the company's intent to reduce reliance on Qualcomm and maintain greater control over its hardware ecosystem.
A Potential Shift in Apple's Product Lineup
The iPhone 17 Air might replace the current iPhone Plus variant, suggesting a reimagined product strategy. By addressing growing demand for thinner, more portable smartphones, Apple could diversify its offerings while moving toward a more minimalist design philosophy.
Launch Timing
If Apple follows its traditional schedule, the iPhone 17 Air will debut in September 2025, alongside other iPhone 17 models.
